As of 1 July, the reconstruction of Burebista Street in Ungheni has a second open front: the city hall began paving the section between Petru Rareș and Zamfir Arbore streets — more than 700 metres of “heavily used” roadway that also carries urban public transport. The work is carried out by the municipal enterprise SRL „Servicii Comunale Ungheni”, with money from the city hall budget, according to the local administration.
The announcement came on the very day when, as Triunghi.md reported earlier, the 1 July deadline cited for completing the main Burebista project expired. On Wednesday morning, 1 July, Mayor Vitalie Vrabie visited the site and, according to the city hall, insisted on the quality of the road.
Two works in parallel, two sources of money
Work on Burebista is now proceeding on two segments, with different financing. The newly paved section — Petru Rareș–Zamfir Arbore, more than 700 metres — is paid for from the local budget. Separately, the 10,309,494.56-lei project “Modernising Burebista Street for the sustainable urban development of Ungheni municipality” continues; funded through the government programme “Europe Is Close”, 2025 edition, it covers the stretch from the junction with Petru Rareș onwards along Ion Neculce Street to Ștefan cel Mare Street. That one is carried out by SA „Drumuri-Strășeni”, and the works are “continuing”, the city hall says — without announcing a completion date.
The 1 July deadline had been estimated by the administration back in February, at the signing of the contract, and repeated on 15 June, when the city hall spoke of completion “this summer”. In its 1 July post, the administration no longer explicitly returns to the deadline for the “Europe Is Close” project; the mayor only says, in a comment, that the section now being paved “will be finished in a few days”.
What comes next on the ground
According to the mayor, on the section under way, because of the road’s transversal slope, rainwater will be channelled towards the green zone, while a sidewalk on the housing side is planned for next year. On the Burebista–Neculce–Ștefan cel Mare stretch, the administration promises two traffic lanes, green spaces to take up water and sidewalks on both sides. These are important roads for urban transport routes 2 and 5, Vitalie Vrabie notes.
After Burebista, the city hall says other streets will also enter repairs — among them Arcașii lui Ștefan, in the Ungheni Vale neighbourhood, and Mihai Viteazul, in Berești-Vasilica — likewise justified by public transport routes.
Residents’ complaints and requests
Several residents reacted in the comments under the city hall’s post. Some ask that, after paving, a ditch be dug to drain rainwater towards the agricultural fields, citing stretches that flood after rain; others point out that sidewalks and repairs are still needed on the segments towards Ion Neculce and towards the Dănuțeni health centre, as well as on the access roads to houses. These are users’ opinions, which the newsroom has not verified independently.
At district level, official data show the scale of the local road network: at the end of 2025, Ungheni district had 172.5 kilometres of local roads, of which 167 kilometres had a hard surface, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The two Burebista segments modernise a part of this network, inside the municipality.
As of publication, Triunghi.md has not consulted the local-budget allocation decision for the section carried out by SRL „Servicii Comunale Ungheni” and has not obtained a reaction from the contractors.
