Update — 1 July 2026. By the 1 July deadline, the works on Burebista were not finished. The city hall announced that the “Europe Is Close” project is continuing and that it had separately begun paving a second section of the street from the local budget — see Burebista Street in Ungheni: paving begins on a second, 700-metre section, funded from the local budget.
The reconstruction of Burebista Street in Ungheni, in the Dănuțeni neighbourhood, is entering its final stretch — but about two weeks before the 1 July deadline, the works are being slowed in places by fences and structures that, the city hall says, sit on public land.
Mayor Vitalie Vrabie visited the site on 15 June, together with specialists, to set new tasks for the designers and builders, Ungheni City Hall announced. Besides the carriageway, Burebista is to get sidewalks, a parking lot and green spaces. The mayor asked that the street become a „model” one for the town and especially for Dănuțeni, according to the local administration.
The works are part of the project „Modernizarea străzii Burebista pentru dezvoltare urbană durabilă a municipiului Ungheni” (Modernising Burebista Street for the sustainable urban development of Ungheni), financed under the government’s local-roads modernisation programme „Europa este aproape” (Europe is Near), 2025 edition. The total value is 10,309,494.56 lei, of which the National Fund for Regional and Local Development provides 9 million lei, with the rest — about 1.3 million — coming from the local budget, according to the city hall and the announcement made at the contract signing, in February.
The works contract was signed on 10 February with the company SA „Drumuri-Strășeni”, responsible for rebuilding Burebista Street and a section of Ion Neculce Street, between Burebista and Ștefan cel Mare streets. At the time, the city hall estimated that works would start in mid-March and be completed by 1 July 2026. In the 15 June post, the administration says the site started up „in April” and that the works are to be finished „this summer”.
Reconstruction works will begin in mid-March, depending on weather conditions, and are estimated to be completed by 1 July 2026.

According to the city hall, the two streets had not been repaired in more than 40 years — a claim that Triunghi.md could not verify from independent sources.
The obstacle — occupied public land
The local administration says the works are hampered in places by fences and structures put up by residents on public land, and that they are now to vacate the plots so that sidewalks, the parking lot and green spaces can be built. This is the city hall’s account; the people concerned are not named, and their side has not, so far, been presented. Triunghi.md has not independently verified which plots are involved or on what grounds.
Burebista Street was selected for the programme following a public consultation organised by the city hall, in which residents were invited to propose a street for rehabilitation. The choice was, however, limited to streets for which the administration already held the technical documentation — a programme eligibility condition.
In the background — complaints about quality
In response to the city hall’s post, several citizens reacted in the comments; some called for „full control” throughout the works and pointed to other recently renovated streets in the town where, they claim, damage has already appeared. These are users’ opinions, not verified by the newsroom.
At district level, official data show the scale of the local road network: at the end of 2025, Ungheni district had 172.5 kilometres of local roads, of which 167 kilometres had a hard surface, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The Burebista project modernises one segment of that network, within the town.
As of publication, Triunghi.md had not consulted the contract or the co-financing decision, and had not obtained a response from the contractor or from the residents affected by the land clearing.
