Decebal street in Ungheni is going under construction again. The City Hall says the first machinery was brought in on 23 June, and the actual rehabilitation works on a 1,003-metre stretch, in the Tineretului neighbourhood, begin on 24 June 2026.
The section between the junction with Alexandru Cosmescu street and the junction with Oleg Ungureanu street will be modernised, according to the local administration. It is the stretch that provides access from the city to the “Ungheni-Business” free economic zone, one of the busiest arteries in the municipality.
A project that has been on paper since 2022
For the residents of Decebal, the 24 June start comes after years of waiting. The same stretch — “from Cozmescu street to Ungureanu street” — already appeared in a mayoral order of 8 April 2022, which appointed a person responsible for its reconstruction alongside several other roads in the city, according to the State Register of Local Acts. The document existed, but works on the ground only began now, after the project secured financing and was awarded through a tender.
Where the money comes from
The rehabilitation is part of the project “Modernising and renovating road infrastructure to ensure access to the «Ungheni-Business» free economic zone”, carried out by the Government through the Centre Regional Development Agency. The total investment exceeds 25 million lei, of which about 22 million come from the National Fund for Regional and Local Development, with the rest representing the contribution of Ungheni City Hall, according to the local administration.
The works contract itself, signed on 13 March 2026 in Ialoveni between the Centre RDA, Ungheni City Hall and the company Aedificator LLC, amounts to 21.93 million lei, the state agency MOLDPRES announced at the time of signing. The difference between the two figures reflects the structure of the project: over 25 million is the total value of the investment, while 21.93 million is the price of the construction works set by the tender.
What the works involve
Along the 1,003 metres, the roadway is to be rehabilitated, parking spaces built, new natural-gas networks laid, new street lighting installed and an underground stormwater collection and drainage system put in place, according to the City Hall. Concrete stormwater pipes have already been delivered to the site, visible in the on-site images published by the administration.
The completion deadline set in the contract is 11 months from the date of the Works Commencement Order, according to MOLDPRES. On its own channel, however, the City Hall says the contractor has given assurances that the works will be finished “by autumn”. Mayor Vitalie Vrabie, present on site, asked for a clear execution schedule so that the street is rehabilitated in the shortest possible time, according to the administration.

Who benefits
According to the estimates MOLDPRES presented at the signing of the contract, the modernised road should benefit over 24,760 residents of the municipality, the 59 residents of the free economic zone, around 25 economic operators and potential investors, as well as the municipal enterprise “Servicii Comunale Ungheni”, responsible for managing the road and stormwater networks. The director of the Centre RDA, Ion Pînzari, stressed that the investment is of strategic importance for the economic development of the municipality and the entire region, according to the same source.
Decebal street has, moreover, been at the centre of several of the City Hall’s infrastructure projects in recent years — from arranging parking near the central park to plans for easing traffic towards the Central Market. The rehabilitation of the 1,003 metres towards the economic zone modernises one section of this main artery of the city.
At district level, official data show the scale of the local road network: at the end of 2025, Ungheni district had 172.5 kilometres of local roads, of which 167 kilometres with a hard surface, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The Decebal stretch modernises a strip of this network, inside the municipality.
