A district sports school, on its modest budget, will play from next season in the same league as the academies of Sheriff and Zimbru. The Ungheni District Sports School announces that its U16 youth team has qualified for the top tier of youth football in the Republic of Moldova — an achievement the institution calls “history for Ungheni”.
The announcement was made on the school’s official page, a public institution under the Ungheni Education Directorate. And the qualification is not just self-praise: the Moldovan Football Federation (FMF) confirms, in its records, that the Ungheni team was among the eight that played the promotion round at the U16 age group — alongside names such as CSF Bălți, FC Petrocub and FC Milsami. The draw for that round had taken place in January.
”Liga Națională”, not “Divizia Națională”
A clarification is in order, because the names are confusing. The school announced qualification “for the Divizia Națională”. That was, until a few years ago, the name of the top of the youth pyramid; today, in the FMF’s official nomenclature, the top tier of youth football by age group is called Liga Națională (categories from U11 to U17). It is the same level — the highest one — only the name has changed.
Below it sit Liga 1, Liga 2 and the Regional League, and one moves between them through promotion rounds. It was exactly through one such round — the U16 one — that the Ungheni team went up.
David among Goliaths
What makes the story matter locally is not the standing itself, but the balance of power. In the new tier, the Ungheni youngsters will meet the academies that dominate youth football in Moldova — Sheriff Tiraspol, Zimbru, Dacia Buiucani, the Rebeja Academy — structures with budgets and infrastructure in an altogether different category.
Although the team operates on a minimal budget compared with the giants of the capital or Tiraspol, the group’s strength comes from the unity of the Ungheni community.

The school thanks, for “making this journey possible”, the Ungheni District Council and the Education Directorate — the institution’s administrators — and the children’s parents. The team is trained by coach Constantin Lungu, a graduate of the National Institute of Physical Education and Sport.
What is not yet public
A few things are not yet public. The school has not disclosed the squad of players, and the full standings of the promotion round do not appear openly on the federation’s website, so for now the qualification rests on the institution’s announcement, corroborated by the participation in the U16 round confirmed by the FMF. Likewise, “the first time in history” remains the school’s claim — plausible for a team that until now competed in a lower tier, but one the federation has not marked out distinctly.
One thing, however, is already clear: from the autumn, the strongest youth academies in the country will come, one by one, to the Ungheni town stadium. And that, for a district club-school, really is a first.
