Carabinieri and police in Ungheni have destroyed 400 cannabis plants that had grown by themselves on abandoned land in the district. According to the General Inspectorate of Carabinieri, the plants were found and destroyed on the spot on the outskirts of two villages — 150 at Florițoaia Nouă and 250 at Grozasca.
The operation was a joint one: carabinieri from the Ungheni Mobile Intervention Company of the General Inspectorate of Carabinieri worked together with officers of the Ungheni Police Inspectorate. The plants, the institution specifies, had “grown wild and untended” — that is, they sprouted by themselves on neglected land, rather than being a crop planted and tended by someone. They were destroyed on the spot, “to prevent their use for illegal purposes”.
The statement says nothing about targeted individuals, detentions or cases — only about finding and destroying the plants. Cannabis growing wild along the edges of fields and on unused land is a common presence in rural areas, and destroying it before it is harvested is part of the routine work by which police and carabinieri try to cut off the raw material for drugs.
The General Inspectorate of Carabinieri says such operations are continuing and urges people to alert the authorities if they come across illegal crops or other suspicious activity. It is the same kind of field mission that the Ungheni Mobile Intervention Company carries out, alongside the police, in the district.
