Update — 24 October 2026. The yellow rain code expired on Friday at 21.00. The hydrological warning issued on 23 October says the rain will not significantly change the situation on the Prut, which stays under orange code until 30 October. The text below has been updated.

On Friday, 23 October, between 10.00 and 21.00, Ungheni district was under a yellow code for heavy rain. The Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Authority issued the warning on Thursday at 13.00: “significant rainfall will fall over extensive areas”, and through accumulation or in short intervals 15–49 litres of water per square metre could fall.

By 07.15 on Saturday, 24 October, neither the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations nor Apă-Canal Ungheni had published on their websites any interventions linked to the rain in the district. The latest intervention published by the water utility dates from 22 October: a leak on the water main at 15 O. Ungureanu Street.

The text of the warning did not list the districts. On the map that came with it, Ungheni district was coloured yellow, like most of the country. Only the north-west remained outside the warning: Briceni, Ocnița, Edineț, Dondușeni, Rîșcani, Drochia and Glodeni.

The Prut stays under orange code

The rain did not help the river. In the hydrological warning issued on Friday at 14.00, the Authority notes: “The rain recorded and forecast will not cause significant changes to the hydrological situation.”

For 24–30 October, the Prut is under orange code along the whole Costești – Brânza section, which includes Ungheni: 20–30% of the long-term average for the month. The week before, according to the 16 October warning, the Criva – Ungheni section was at 35% (yellow code) and the section downstream of the town, as far as Brânza, at 30% (orange code). The low flow has lasted since the summer: in August, the Prut at Ungheni was carrying less than a third of its normal flow.

The Authority asks businesses and the public “to use water resources rationally”. The warning and the map of affected areas are updated on meteo.md.

What IGSU and the Police advise in heavy rain

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) advised, for the duration of the rain:

  • travel only if strictly necessary;
  • reduce speed and keep a safe distance between cars;
  • do not cross roads covered by water and do not try to drive through flooded areas;
  • stay away from rivers, streams and other watercourses, where the water level can rise quickly;
  • check that ditches and drains around the home are clear, so water does not build up;
  • do not stop near trees, poles, billboards or other unstable structures;
  • do not touch fallen power lines; report them to the authorities.

The Ungheni Police Inspectorate asked drivers to adapt their speed to the weather and watch for pedestrians, and pedestrians to cross only at permitted places. For any emergency, the number is 112.
