Weightlifters from the Ungheni Sports School for Children and Juniors came back from the international cadet weightlifting tournament „Bălți Mayor’s Cup”, held from 8 to 11 October 2026, with 3 first, 4 second and 3 third places, the school says. The team had 12 athletes, coached by Vasili Sitnicov and Mihail Babin.

The individual tournament, for boys and girls up to 17, brought together athletes from Bălți, Ungheni, Nisporeni, Sîngerei, Tiraspol and the Chișinău municipal Sports Lyceum, as well as from Romania and Ukraine. The school did not publish the total number of participants.

Ten of twelve athletes on the podium

The first places came in the 51 kg, 65 kg and over 85 kg categories. The second places came at 32 kg, 39 kg, 43 kg and 51 kg, and the third places at 32 kg, 51 kg and 85 kg. Each placing belongs to a different athlete, so 10 of the team’s 12 weightlifters made the podium.

The athletes attend three lyceums in the city: six at the Ion Creangă Theoretical Lyceum, four at Mihai Eminescu and two at Gheorghe Asachi. According to the school, five of them improved their personal bests, and two of the medallists are beginners. Because the athletes are children and juniors, we do not publish their names.
