On Ștefan cel Mare street in Ungheni, on the stretch between the former biochemical plant and the junction with Podurilor street, a pavement is being built — for the first time on this section. It is 770 metres long and 2 metres wide and includes a bike lane, according to Ungheni City Hall. Once finished, one of the busiest streets in town will have a sidewalk from one end to the other.
The work is carried out by «Servicii Comunale Ungheni», and the money comes from the City Hall budget. Mayor Vitalie Vrabie inspected the site, drew attention to the quality of the works and said he was satisfied with the pace at which they are advancing, the local administration reported.

Who is doing the work
«Servicii Comunale Ungheni» is no ordinary firm but a municipally owned company — founded by the Ungheni Municipal Council and run by Igor Casian. The same company also runs the city’s route 5 public transport, waste collection and other communal services, and its registered activities include road construction. Unlike other recent works in town — Burebista street, modernised by a firm from Strășeni, or the pavement on Națională, built by one from Bălți — the pavement on Ștefan cel Mare is being done by a company owned by the city.
One item on a list paid for with debt
Beyond a construction site, the Ștefan cel Mare pavement is one piece of a bigger plan. It is listed by name in a decision of the Ungheni Municipal Council from 15 May 2026, which approves the list of local roads to be modernised this year. And the way these works are paid for is worth stating plainly: not from savings, but from borrowed money.
The decision provides for raising up to 10 million lei through an issue of municipal bonds — in effect, the city borrows on the market, undertaking to repay the money over time, in order to fix its streets faster. On the same list, alongside Ștefan cel Mare, are Burebista, Mihai Viteazu, Arcașii lui Ștefan cel Mare, the Decebal lane, C. Stamati and Națională street.
Exactly how much the Ștefan cel Mare pavement costs cannot be said for now: the Council’s decision publishes only the total ceiling of the loan — those 10 million lei for the whole list — not the sum allocated to each object. It is a piece of information missing from the public file, one that only the City Hall or the contracting company can provide broken down.
A wave of asphalt and paving — and a waiting list
The pavement does not appear on empty ground. Ungheni is going through a wave of road works: Burebista street was modernised for about 10.3 million lei, Decebal and Tineretului streets swallowed over 25 million lei through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development, and on Națională street a 1,200 m pavement was launched, also in June, under the EU4Moldova programme. The Ștefan cel Mare pavement joins that line.
Except that, in the comments on the City Hall’s announcement, the joy came bundled with a list of requests. Residents immediately named other streets that, they say, have been left without a pavement: Mihai Viteazul, Tudor Arghezi, Sărăcuța, Burebista at number 17, or Tudor Sobolevschi. On the last one, the dissatisfaction has a verifiable basis: Sobolevschi street underwent a major repair — but the roadway was redone, without a pavement. One of the streets people are asking for — Mihai Viteazu — is already on the list in the Council’s decision for this year; for the others, the answer remains to be seen.
For pedestrians on Ștefan cel Mare, though, the change is concrete and immediate: on a stretch where until now they walked along the edge of the roadway, they will soon have a pavement and a bike lane.
The details of the work — the stretch, the dimensions, the contractor and the fact that funding comes from the budget — come from the official announcement by Ungheni City Hall. The pavement’s inclusion in the list of roads modernised in 2026 and the financing through municipal bonds (up to 10 million lei for the whole programme) are confirmed by Decision No. 4/25 of the Ungheni Municipal Council, dated 15 May 2026, published in the State Register of Local Acts; the same decision does not publish a separate cost for each object. The profile of the «Servicii Comunale Ungheni» company comes from the State Register of legal entities. The requests for pavements on other streets are taken from residents’ comments on the City Hall’s post; the situation of Sobolevschi street (repaired without a pavement) is confirmed by an act of the local administration.
