Summer brings a dress rehearsal to Ungheni too: the third edition of the Theatre Camp run by the TeatrUngheni troupe has begun. On the first day, according to the organisers, 23 children formed two teams and started filming a „camp mini-series”, in which each participant becomes the character of their own story. The programme runs for ten days.
Who runs it
The TeatrUngheni troupe describes itself as „a troupe of beginner actors”, guided and coordinated by Edgar Bunea — the director who became, at the start of June, the artistic director of the Ungheni House of Culture, promising a „cultural revolution” in the town. The summer camp, now in its third edition according to the organisers, is one of the concrete forms in which that promise turns into activity for children.
Through acting exercises, teamwork and filming, the children spend ten days learning to stand in front of an audience and a camera. „This was only the first day. We still have nine to go”, the organisers wrote at the start of the edition.
Why it matters for a town whose young people are leaving
A theatre camp may look like a summer trifle. Set against the district’s backdrop, however, it takes on a different weight: the number of young people aged 15–29 in the Ungheni district fell from about 24,000 in 2014 to around 11,000 in 2026 — fewer than half, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. In such a landscape, every activity that gives children a reason to stay, to express themselves and to work together matters more than it seems.
Over the ten days, the children leave not only with memories but with a „mini-series” filmed by themselves — the concrete result of this year’s camp.
