The city of Ungheni will host, from July 20 to 24, 2026, an international camp for 25 young people, dedicated to climate change and green energy. The participants — aged between 15 and 19 — come from Ungheni, but also from the partner cities of Tulcea (Romania) and Thermi (Greece), Ungheni City Hall announced on Wednesday, July 15.
The young people are members of the volunteer groups in Ungheni and of the Green Clubs in the two partner cities, according to the local administration. For five days, they will work alongside facilitators and experts in an interactive program on climate change, renewable energy, green infrastructure and sustainable lifestyle. The City Hall also describes the camp as an occasion for intercultural exchange between the young people from the three countries.
For now, the administration has not made public the exact place where the camp will be held, nor the detailed day-by-day program. The announcement mentions only the period, July 20–24, and the general themes.
The European project behind the camp
The camp is part of the project “Urban Climate Adaptation and Recovery Efforts through Green Infrastructure in Black Sea Basin – UCare” (code BSB00822), funded through the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme 2021–2027. The project is implemented by the city halls of Ungheni, Tulcea and Thermi, together with the Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Ungheni, with the city of Ungheni as the project lead.
According to the project’s official fact sheet, UCare aims to restore urban green spaces and adapt cities to climate change — from degraded parks to reducing the urban heat island effect. The total budget is €1.467.793,32, of which €1.321.013,97 comes from European Interreg funds. The project started in August 2025 and runs for 24 months, until August 2027.
For Ungheni, the camp is the “youth” end of a broader effort to make the city greener, which also includes the regeneration of the city’s green spaces. The direct stake for the community: European money spent in the city and a group of young people from Ungheni trained, for five days, on environmental and energy topics.
Launched in Ungheni in October 2025
UCare was officially launched in Ungheni on October 17, 2025, through a conference at the Palace of Culture that brought together more than 65 participants — local and central authorities, academia, non-governmental organizations and the press. Ungheni Mayor Vitalie Vrabie also spoke at the opening. At that time, the project team presented the main lines of work: the regeneration of green areas in the three cities, a learning platform for managing green spaces, and education actions on urban resilience. The youth camp in July is one of those actions now reaching the ground.
