On Thursday, 16 July, the Zagarancea Public Library publicly presented its teenagers’ artificial-intelligence club, in an announcement published on the informal AI appreciation day. “Today is about Artificial Intelligence,” the library wrote on its page together with the Zagarancea commune mayor’s office, closing with an invitation: “We are waiting for you at the library!”

The teenagers’ club “Friends of Artificial Intelligence” (in the original, „Prieteni cu Inteligența Artificială”) operates at the library and meets on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, from 18.00, according to the poster published by the institution. The poster lists the club’s activities: learning about artificial intelligence, exploring useful tools, creating digital projects and discussing the ethics and future of this technology. The library notes that it chose “an hour after working hours, to make the time set aside for club members more convenient”; sign-ups and details are available at the library’s phone number, 060 599 477. According to the schedule on the poster, the next meeting is due on Sunday, 26 July.

Artificial Intelligence is like fire: an extraordinary discovery, capable of illuminating, creating and transforming, but one that must be used responsibly, ethically and with discernment.

Who runs the library

The Zagarancea Public Library is run by Tatiana Zaițev — one of the laureates of the “Librarian of the Year 2023” title, a distinction awarded by the Librarians’ Association of the Republic of Moldova, according to the professional journal BiblioPolis. Zagarancea commune has two public libraries, in Zagarancea and in Semeni, both under the mayor’s office.

The date of the announcement is no accident: 16 July is AI Appreciation Day — an informal awareness day that appeared in 2021 and is promoted through international themed calendars. The library accompanied the announcement with an infographic about what artificial intelligence is and where it helps — from education and health to climate monitoring.
