The Ungheni Health Centre has been recognised by the Government of the Republic of Moldova for its work persuading people to give blood. The institution received a Diploma of Honour on World Blood Donor Day, marked on 14 June.
In the document, the Government confers on the „IMSP Ungheni Health Centre” the distinction „in recognition of its contribution to promoting and recruiting blood donors”, as well as on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day. The diploma is signed by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and came with a trophy bearing the national campaign’s message — „Donate a drop of humanity. Save lives”.
The distinction was awarded during the national ceremony at the Palace of the Republic in Chișinău, organised by the National Blood Transfusion Centre, where 70 regular donors and dozens of institutions promoting voluntary, unpaid donation were honoured. On that day alone, more than 600 people gave blood in Chișinău. The Minister of Health, Emil Ceban, thanked donors and medical staff.

Why the award matters right now
The recognition comes at the worst time of year for blood reserves. In the Republic of Moldova, around 100 patients need blood and blood-component transfusions every day, and hospitals are issued some 500 bags daily, according to the National Blood Transfusion Centre. Almost 75,000 people donate each year (2025 figures).
In summer, however, the number of donors halves — from about 400 to roughly 200 a month — and reserves of red-cell mass last, without new donors, only about seven days, the same National Blood Transfusion Centre has warned. A single donation can save, according to the Ministry of Health, at least three lives. Blood cannot be produced in a laboratory — it depends entirely on donors. That is exactly why it matters who persuades people to come and donate in the critical months — the work for which the Ungheni centre was honoured.
What the Ungheni Health Centre actually is
The award comes amid a donation-promotion campaign the institution runs between 25 May and 25 June, under the same call — „Donate a drop of humanity. Save lives”. In its post, the centre, headed by Belbas Oleg, thanks medical staff and everyone who donated, and sends a direct message to the people of Ungheni: „It’s not hard to be a hero. You can be the hero”.
The Ungheni Health Centre is no ordinary clinic. With 43 doctors and 160 nurses, it provides primary care to more than 100,000 people from the Ungheni district and neighbouring districts, according to the National Health Insurance Company.
Over the past year, the centre has gone through a series of upgrades. In October 2025, its functional-investigations department and clinical laboratory were renovated through an investment of about 1.8 million lei (funds from CNAM and the Ungheni District Council), and from 2026 the laboratory began offering new tests — hormonal analyses and biological markers — for which patients previously had to travel to Chișinău. On 11 June 2026, in the very week of the award, the centre hosted a delegation from Uzbekistan, which came to see how primary health care works in Moldova.
