A risk that loomed, quite literally, over a village kindergarten has been removed. The damaged chimney on the grounds of the “Romanița” Early Education Institution in the village of Chirileni, Ungheni district, has been demolished — a structure 30 metres tall, fallen into an advanced state of decay.
According to the public announcement, the structure posed a danger not only to the children attending the institution but also to nearby residents: a brick chimney tens of metres high, cracked and worn by time, can crumble piece by piece or, in the worst case, collapse all at once.
Why it mattered
Such chimneys are the legacy of old coal- or wood-fired heating systems in public institutions. Many have long been out of use but remain standing — and when the brick starts to come loose above a kindergarten yard, a relic becomes, overnight, a concrete danger.
The controlled demolition of such a chimney is exactly the kind of work that does not make headlines when it is done in time — and that would have made them, dramatically, had the structure collapsed onto someone.
