Dozens of Ungheni residents, «young and old», set off on Friday, 26 June 2026, from the Ungheni city hall in the first stage of the second «VeloVineri» season — a leisure bike ride through the city. They cycled along the municipality’s main streets — Națională, Romană, Ștefan cel Mare and Petru Rareș — to «Lavanda Story», the lavender field on the edge of town, where host Andrei Radu welcomed the participants.
The news, however, is not the ride itself but what comes after it. The city hall announced that «VeloVineri» is no longer a one-off event but a weekly one: «We look forward to seeing you in the coming months, every Friday at 4 p.m., in front of the Ungheni city hall», the organisers said. In short, the city aims to hold a community bike ride every week — through to the autumn.
From an event to a habit
The difference between an annual edition and a weekly rhythm is not a detail. A spectacle gathers people once and ends; a meeting that recurs every Friday, at the same hour and from the same place, tries to build a habit — exactly what a city needs if it wants cycling to become an everyday choice rather than a one-evening curiosity.
That is precisely Ungheni’s stated goal: through its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the city has set a target of having one in ten trips made by bicycle by 2030. One ride a week will not move that figure on its own, but it is exactly the kind of repeated gesture that normalises the bicycle on the city’s streets.
The route of the first stage
For the first stage the organisers chose the city’s busiest arteries — Națională, Romană, Ștefan cel Mare and Petru Rareș — the very streets that, for the rest of the week, cyclists share with an ever-growing car fleet. The finishing point was «Lavanda Story», the lavender field on the edge of Ungheni — a direct link to the city’s other ambition: active tourism.
It is no accident that «VeloVineri» is organised by the city hall together with the Tourist Information Centre, while the Ungheni District Police Inspectorate helped with safety along the route — a sign that a ride along the city’s main streets also needs a minimum of traffic coordination.
Why the city is pedalling: 311 cars per thousand residents
Beyond the Friday-evening atmosphere, the stakes are serious. The very official analysis prepared for the European project shows a city that is motorising fast: at the end of 2023, Ungheni had 311 cars for every 1,000 residents — about 40% more than the district average. The city accounted for over 40% of the entire district’s car fleet, with ever-denser traffic on the main arteries.
At the same time, cycling infrastructure exists but is thin: a network estimated in official documents at between 15 and 20 kilometres of lanes, many of them narrow (around 1.2 metres) and not separated from traffic. «VeloVineri» runs within the CycleRight project, funded by the European Union through the Interreg Europe programme, in which Ungheni is a partner city with its own Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. That is why a weekly ride is not just recreation: it is the visible, street-level part of a strategy to change habits.
