The Ungheni Territorial Football Association organized a football festival for 100 students from the 'M. Eminescu' high school on August 27, the fourth day of the 'Football and Independence in Ungheni' program. The Summer Cup in mini-football reached matchday six.
After losing 0-3 to Dacia Buiucani and 0-10 to Academia Rebeja-UTM, the U17 team of Ungheni District Sports School drew at home against FC Zimbru U17, the league's second-placed side. The crowd made the difference, the Sports School wrote.
FCM Ungheni claimed their first win of the season on Saturday, at the town stadium, beating CF Univer 6-2 in the third round of Liga 1. The town's side led 5-1 by the break — Dmitri Maneacov scored twice, with Florin Cojocaru, Stanislav Sarain and Andrei Stratan completing the first half — before Bogdan Placinta set the final score in stoppage time. The three points lift them from 5th to 3rd in the group, two points off the top two. Next up is an away game at Zimbru-2 on Friday, 21 August.
The town's team opened its season on Saturday, at the municipal stadium, in front of 300 spectators — the biggest attendance of the round in Group A. Andrei Stratan opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but Vulturii Cutezători turned the match around with two goals in the 45+1 and 45+4 minutes, then sealed it in the 60th. After the first round, FCM Ungheni has zero points. Next match: Saturday, 8 August, away.
The group of children born in 2018 — the youngest athletes at Ungheni District Sports School — returned with the silver medal from the ‘Junior Mamaia Cup’, a children’s football tournament held in Mamaia, Romania. It is the youngest link in a district school that, in the same summer, promoted its U16 juniors to the National League and that already held, since 2023, a national bronze in beach football. Behind the trip are coach Constantin Lungu and the parents who accompanied the little ones.
The Competitions Committee of the Ungheni Territorial Football Association, through record no. 10 of 9 July, sanctioned three players sent off in the first legs of the quarter-finals of the district «MAGIRUS» Cup 2026, played on 5 July. Each was shown a red card after two yellows, each is suspended for the next match — the second leg — and each club pays a 200-lei fine. The sanction that hurts most falls on FC Speranța Semeni: it loses a player exactly for the home second leg in which it has to claw back a goal.
Children from the commune of Zagarancea, Ungheni district, have won the second edition of the international youth tournament «Cupa Prieteniei» (the Friendship Cup), held between 29 June and 6 July in Montmorillon, France. FC Zagarancea beat the host team, UES Montmorillon, 3–2 in the final, repeating its win from the first edition in 2025. On Sunday, 5 July, all four first-leg matches of the quarter-finals of the Ungheni district football cup, «MAGIRUS», were played. According to the organiser, the Ungheni Territorial Football Association, FC Haiduc Bumbăta produced the round's biggest score — 5-2 against FC Barsa Ungheni — while FC Regina Maria Ungheni beat FC Unirea Cetireni 2-0. In the other two ties, FC Sculeni and FC Mănoilești won narrowly, 1-0 and 2-1, so everything will be decided in the return legs a week from now.
Eugen Șarpațchii, a name from the town team's squad two decades ago, has given back to the football he grew up in: he donated 16 pairs of boots and 12 training bibs to the girls of Măcărești and 2,000 lei to FCM Ungheni's U11 and U12 groups. This is no donation to a „charity case” — the girls' team of the „Elada” high school in Măcărești reached the national final of the „Speranța” tournament this spring. A former player helping those who come after him, and a village girls' side that already plays in the country's age-group elite.
