Three neighbouring communes in Ungheni district — Bușila, Chirileni and Negurenii Vechi — have started the voluntary amalgamation process and are now consulting their residents. Each council voted, in the spring, to initiate the merger, and together the three would gather 3,533 residents — above the 3,000 threshold that the administrative reform requires of a mayoralty. The idea of a single administration for three villages divides people: some see it as a chance for better services, others fear they will lose their home mayoralty. Lyceum admission 2026 in Ungheni: eight lyceums, the full calendar and how the competition average is calculated

The Ungheni Education Department opened admission to the 10th grade for the 2026–2027 school year on Monday, 13 July. Eight lyceums in the district receive files — five in the town of Ungheni and one each in Pîrlița, Sculeni and Măcărești — while Cornești has no lyceum, so its graduates must look elsewhere. Files are submitted until 22 July, online or on paper, and a pupil may apply to several lyceums at once. Ungheni's transport operator says double-charging is impossible. Its own website promises less — and nowhere does it say how you get your money back

Under the official notice about paying by card on the bus, people in Ungheni say they were charged twice and three times over, and one passenger says he paid 28 lei for a 6-lei ride. The operator guarantees on Facebook that «it is impossible to be charged twice». On its own portal, the guarantee is far narrower. We read the regulation approved by the local council, the operator's contract and the payment services law: the procedure by which a wrongly charged passenger gets their money back is written nowhere — but the law gives them firm deadlines, both with the operator and with the bank.

Ungheni's Medical College has turned out 125 nurses — its largest class in four years, in a district that has lost 94

The class of 2026 collected its diplomas on 14 July: 125 graduates, in four groups. The number climbs year after year — 85 in 2023, 119 in 2024, 119 in 2025 — and it arrives in the very district that has 59 mid-level medical staff per 10,000 inhabitants against 94 nationally. How many of the class stay home is unknown: neither the hospital nor the health centre publishes its nursing vacancies, and the state's 96,000-lei grant is written for villages.

An 11-year-old boy lost in «Micul Cluj» park was walked home by carabinieri — the third person the same company has helped in 12 days

The boy, disoriented, could not find his own way home. Carabinieri on patrol identified where he lived and took him back to his parents. Across the whole country in 2025, carabinieri returned more than 20 lost children to their families — and the official rule when a child goes missing is to call 112 immediately, not after 24 hours.

Seven pupils from Ungheni's art school are exhibiting in Iași, in a Municipal Museum gallery, until 31 July. Entry is free

The exhibition «Linii în dialog» («Lines in Dialogue») brings together 17 young artists from Iași and Ungheni at the «Dumitru I. Grumăzescu» Galleries in Iași — a section of the «Regina Maria» Municipal Museum, the museum network of Iași City Hall. It is open until 31 July, and its opening was held on Thursday, 16 July. Seven of the exhibitors are pupils of the «Raisa Cojocaru» School of Fine Arts in Ungheni, coached by the school's headmistress. The show is run not by the school but by an association from Iași, through a project whose partners include Ungheni City Hall. Entry is free.

Ungheni City Hall advertised, 16 months ago, the very job for which it is now getting an American volunteer for free

On 13 July, City Hall announced that Megan Knox — a Peace Corps volunteer who came from Seattle — is joining the team for two years, to digitalise its services. The natural question is why not a Polytechnic graduate, from Ungheni. The answer is in City Hall's own archive: on 21 March 2025 it advertised the post of “IT specialist (in Digital Transformation)” — and it asked not for engineering, but for public administration, economics or law. No result of that competition was ever published, and the mayor says now that he still wants the person. City Hall's best-paid specialist earns 8,960 lei a month; the average in IT services is 49,654. And the job itself — “digitalisation specialist” — is not allowed to exist, as a title, in the staffing schedule of any city hall in Moldova.

The «Elegie» children's choir of Ungheni's Music School wins the Grand Prize at an international competition

The «Elegie» children's choir, conducted by Ala Beleac, won the Grand Prize at the Elite International Arts Competition 2026 — a first-edition contest held entirely online. The distinction is a real victory for the children of Ungheni's Music School, and an occasion to look at the system behind it: a network of municipal art schools with nearly six decades of tradition, in a district that has lost more than half of its young people in twelve years.

«MAGIRUS» Cup semifinals are set: Mănoilești vs Haiduc Bumbăta and Sculeni vs Unirea Cetireni

The quarterfinal second legs of the Ungheni district football cup, «MAGIRUS», were played on Sunday, 12 July, deciding the four semifinalists. The surprise of the evening: FC Unirea Cetireni overturned a 0-2 first-leg deficit against FC Regina Maria. The semifinals are FC Mănoilești vs FC Haiduc Bumbăta and FC Sculeni vs FC Unirea Cetireni.
