Ungheni City Hall calls itself „just a partner” in the downtown garden — but it puts up half the budget

The green space between Înfrățirii Square and the Episcopal Cathedral, covering 0,8 hectares, is being turned into an „urban garden” through a cross-border project funded by the European Union. The total budget is 303.802,50 euros, and Ungheni City Hall states on its page that it is „just a partner”. Programme documents show, however, that the municipality holds the largest individual budget in the project — 152.261 euros, or 50,1% — more than the organisation leading the project. Work begins about five months before the completion deadline.

Seven hours announced, a second day without water: Ungheni District Hospital on the list of those affected

A leak on a water main 500 millimetres in diameter at 8 Vasile Lupu Street was announced on Thursday for a seven-hour intervention, between 09:00 and 16:00. On Friday, the operator said the works were continuing, “as unforeseen technical complications arose during the intervention”, with a new deadline estimated at 17:00. The list of affected consumers on the second day also includes Ungheni District Hospital, which did not appear on the first one. In 2024, the operator reported 270 unplanned interruptions, 268 of which were resolved within the regulatory deadline.

«Were not confirmed»: Ungheni's transport operator finds no double charge and will not say how it checked

Three days after several passengers complained, in the comments under the notice about paying by card on the bus, about multiple charges, SRL «Servicii Comunale Ungheni» announces that it «checked every case reported» and that nothing was confirmed, putting some of the complaints down to «fake profiles». The statement does not say how many cases were checked or by what method, and the questions Triunghi.md sent on 14 July remain unanswered. Under the notice, a woman from Ungheni keeps asking where the journeys on the travel card have gone.

“Commercial diplomacy” in Ungheni: an American factory and aid that has stopped

On 16 July, Mayor Vitalie Vrabie received Nick Pietrowicz, the U.S. Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires a.i., who spoke about “commercial diplomacy” and Ungheni's potential. Beyond the protocol photo, America today means one concrete thing in Ungheni: a factory with American roots (Lear) in the free economic zone and a legacy of USAID projects — bus stops, a fire station, a courthouse — that came to a halt in 2025, when the agency was dismantled. A sober inventory: what is confirmed, what remains only a promise.

Six health centres in Ungheni call the diaspora onto their boards — with a vote, but unpaid

A month after merging the district's health centres — from 11 down to 6 —, the Ungheni District Council is rebuilding their governing boards and inviting doctors who have left the country, as well as people from the community, to take a seat on them. The post carries a vote on the institution's strategy, budget and procurement, but it is unpaid, on a voluntary basis. Applications are due by the end of July — 24 July at the Ungheni Health Centre, 27 July according to the District Council's notice for all six centres.

9.013 budget-funded university places, most of them for teachers — the very field where Ungheni has 73 empty posts

The government has approved the state order for 2026–2027: state universities are opening 9.013 places with budget funding, and the largest share, as last year, goes to teacher training. For a graduate from Ungheni, the stakes are double — the district enters the new school year with 73 uncovered teaching posts, the fifth-largest shortfall in the country, and admissions, entirely online, start on July 27. On top of that comes a second door, the one in Romania, which closes even earlier.

Silver at Mamaia for the youngest footballers of Ungheni Sports School

The group of children born in 2018 — the youngest athletes at Ungheni District Sports School — returned with the silver medal from the ‘Junior Mamaia Cup’, a children’s football tournament held in Mamaia, Romania. It is the youngest link in a district school that, in the same summer, promoted its U16 juniors to the National League and that already held, since 2023, a national bronze in beach football. Behind the trip are coach Constantin Lungu and the parents who accompanied the little ones.

A children's space has opened at the Ungheni employment office, while parents look for work

The Territorial Employment Structure in Ungheni has set up a “child-friendly space” — a secure area equipped with games and books, where young children can stay supervised while their parents, especially mothers, attend job interviews or retraining courses. The idea starts from a real barrier: many women postpone returning to work because they have no one to leave their child with during visits to the office. The space was created through a project of the International Labour Organization, funded by the Government of Switzerland.
