Mănoilești takes its embroidered blouses out of the chest ahead of 28 June — the National Day of Folk Costume

At the end of June, when the Republic of Moldova marks the National Day of Folk Costume, the commune of Mănoilești in the Ungheni district is preparing its own celebration of traditional dress. Behind it stand a network of volunteers, the village House of Culture and the library — and a tradition that, in the Ungheni district, has in other years gathered seven localities. The programme is now confirmed: this year's edition takes place on 28 June, from 16.00, in the village park, with special guests Stela Botez, Petronela Popa and the “Șoimanii” ensemble.

€15,000 from Iași brings heating and a toilet to the family-doctor office in Cioropcani

At an extraordinary session on Thursday, the Ungheni District Council approved a 500,000-lei project that will give the Family Doctors' Office in Cioropcani heating, a sanitary unit and a proper entrance — basic conditions it still lacked. Most of the money, €15,000 out of €24,875, comes from the Iași County Council under a cross-border cooperation agreement signed back in 2009; the district adds the rest. At the same session, councillors allocated money from the district budget and approved writing off worn-out assets at two schools — the exact allocation sum has not yet been made public.

Ungheni has a tourist centre worth 3 million lei, but accommodation capacity has dropped to a third of its 2008 level

The Tourist Information Centre in Ungheni — built with almost 3 million lei under the European «Mayors for Economic Growth» programme — hosted expert Alberto Cottica on Thursday in a meeting described as an «exchange of ideas», with no concrete purpose announced. Beyond the visit, the figures show the real stakes: the centre promotes tourism, but the district's accommodation capacity has fallen to a third of its 2008 level, while the programme that funded it has meanwhile entered its third phase.

ADR Centru checked three sites in Ungheni: the market, the French Park and a 35-million-lei road to Plaiul Fagului

The Centru Regional Development Agency — the body through which the state spends money from the National Fund for Regional and Local Development — inspected three building sites in Ungheni district on 18 June. Alongside the already-known agri-food market and French Park, a third project surfaced: rebuilding the access road to the “Plaiul Fagului” reserve, worth about 35 million lei. Together it is tens of millions in public money — which the official statement no longer puts into figures.

Six European countries rehearsed flood rescue on the Prut, in Ungheni district

A major European civil-protection exercise hosted by Moldova, “MD–EU MODEX 2026”, ended on 18 June. More than 250 rescuers from six countries — Poland, Germany, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Netherlands — spent three days working through realistic flood scenarios, one of the sites being the Prut river, in Ungheni district. The drill comes just a month after the Prut and local streams really did flood Cornova, Pîrlița and Vulpești.

How Ungheni’s libraries hold on in a district with ever fewer children

A donation of children's books, made by writer Elena Vizir to a library in Ungheni, looks like a small gesture. Set against the official figures, it touches a nerve: over two decades, the book stock of the district's libraries has thinned by a quarter — and yet people use them more than fifteen years ago. In a district losing its young people, a library full of children is no longer a banality, but news.

Seven councillors demand a new vote on the Măcărești–Ungheni merger that failed in council

The project under which the commune of Măcărești would merge with the municipality of Ungheni did not gather the required votes in the Communal Council on 16 June — even though, a few days earlier, a citizens' assembly had approved it. At the request of a group of councillors, the mayor convened an extraordinary session for 22 June, with a single item on the agenda. It is the first visible blockage in the cluster of localities the municipality of Ungheni is gathering around itself.
