128,000 tonnes on 383 kilometres: what the new EU truck rules mean for Ungheni's roads

Parliament has passed, in first reading, a law replacing today's weight limits — which differ from one road to another — with a single set aligned to EU standards, and it introduces the concept of TEN-T roads. For Ungheni — an agricultural district that hauls some 128,000 tonnes of grain and sunflower a year over 383 kilometres of roads, and through which the European railway to Iași will pass — the stake is who pays for the roads. Importantly, the weight limits take effect only upon EU accession.

From a 1,000-lei fine to 15 days in jail: what the new child-support law changes for parents in Ungheni

Parliament has adopted a law replacing the up-to-1,000-lei fine for parents who fail to pay child support with up to 15 days of arrest, unpaid community work and a ban on leaving the country — enforced right at the border. For a border district like Ungheni, with the Sculeni crossing and hundreds of divorces a year, the border provision is no abstraction. Nationwide, only 4.7% of parents pay support regularly.

Ungheni opens its Prut and Delia beaches on Sunday — with lifeguards, a rarity in a country where 18 people have drowned in 2026

Mayor Vitalie Vrabie has signed the order opening the 2026 summer season at the municipal beaches on the Prut River and Lake Delia from 21 June, with lifeguards on duty all summer. In a country where almost all drownings happen at unsupervised spots — 18 people have died that way since the start of 2026 — a beach with a lifeguard post is not a formality but a safety measure.

Ungheni district is emptying out, but its only vocational school has 538 students — more than three years ago

From March to May, the Ungheni Vocational School — the only one in the district — took its trades offer into the lower-secondary schools of four districts through a campaign it called the 'Trades Caravan 2026'. Behind a routine recruitment drive sits a trend that runs against the demographics: while the district lost almost 22,000 residents in 11 years, the school has reached 538 students, nearly a third more than three years ago, and vocational education is rebounding nationwide too. Here is what a lower-secondary graduate from Ungheni can study at home in 2026 — and why it matters.

Nine firms in the Ungheni district won ODA grants worth 3.8 million lei — in a year the local economy shrank

The “National Entrepreneurship Tour” stopped in Ungheni, with officials and speeches about opportunity. Beyond the event, though, the question that matters for an Ungheni resident with a business is plainer: how much state support for entrepreneurs actually reaches the district. The answer is in the open data — in 2024, nine firms from the Ungheni district drew ODA grants worth 3.81 million lei, more than neighbouring districts. And that in a year when the district lost both jobs and turnover.

Apă-Canal Ungheni replaces pumps and 350 metres of pipe at the station that treats water from the Prut

At the station that cleans Prut water before it reaches the taps of Ungheni, the local utility Apă-Canal Ungheni has already replaced more than 350 metres of pipe and 25 valves and installed the first of four new high-capacity pumps. The works are the station component of a regional project worth around 32 million lei, financed from the National Fund for Regional and Local Development through ADR Centru, with a contribution from the Ungheni District Council. The operator warns there will be further temporary water shut-offs before completion.

€51.5 million for 20 model schools: Ungheni's “Mihai Eminescu” makes the EIB modernization list

The “Mihai Eminescu” Theoretical High School in Ungheni — one of the largest schools in the Centru region — is the only institution from the Ungheni district among the 20 that Moldova will modernize with European money, under a €51.5 million programme financed mainly by the European Investment Bank. Most of the money, €40 million, is a loan. The sum that will reach Ungheni has not been disclosed, and the school was already given an energy retrofit two years ago — a sign the new money targets what is inside. The backdrop: the district enters the new school year with 73 teaching vacancies, three of them at “Eminescu”.
