On Friday, Ungheni takes to its bikes outside City Hall: 'VeloVineri' returns to a town with 311 cars per 1,000 residents

Ungheni City Hall and the Tourist Information Centre are holding the second edition of 'VeloVineri' on Friday, 26 June 2026, at 4 p.m. — a bike ride starting in front of City Hall. The event is part of the European project CycleRight (Interreg Europe), in which Ungheni is a partner town. Beyond the ride, the stakes are serious: a town with narrow cycle lanes and rising car ownership wants to convince its residents to leave the car at home.

Eggs pulled from shelves in Ungheni district: food safety agency urges return of batch coded 3MD UN 015 over Salmonella

Moldova's National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has ordered the recall of a batch of eggs produced by DANT-AGRO LLC in the village of Pârlița, Ungheni district, after Salmonella Typhimurium was detected in samples from the farm's laying hens. Consumers are urged not to eat eggs marked 3MD UN 015 with a best-before date up to and including 20 July 2026, and to return them to the shop with their receipt. It is not the first such alert at the same farm: an identical one occurred in 2022.

Ungheni district learns from Buzău how not to miss EU money for water, sewerage and roads

The president of Ungheni district, Dionisie Ternovschi, took part in a working session where a delegation from the Romanian city of Buzău, led by mayor Constantin Toma, shared Romania's experience in attracting European funds. The meeting, organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development together with deputy PM Vladimir Bolea, focused on the lessons of the pre-accession period — preparing projects and feasibility studies in good time. Ternovschi says the priorities the district wants to address with such funds are water, sewerage and roads in Ungheni's villages.

Swedish support for the Ungheni merger: the ten city halls signed an agreement with SALAR International

On 24 June, the mayors of the ten localities that want to form a single municipality around Ungheni signed a framework agreement with SALAR International — the Swedish organisation running the «PACE Local» project in Moldova with Sida funding. The support, worth up to about 80,000 euros by City Hall's estimate, is to cover the new municipality's development strategy, one-stop service offices and energy audits for the schools in Semeni, Unțești and Brătuleni. But the agreement comes before the vote that will actually decide whether the merger happens.

The lindens are in bloom on Eminescu and Veronica Micle streets: central Ungheni smells of summer — but only for a few days

On Mihai Eminescu and Veronica Micle streets in central Ungheni the linden trees are in bloom, and the Culture Department is inviting residents to walk under the 'rain' of golden flowers while the scent lasts. It is a spectacle of just a few days — and a lovely coincidence: the poet whose name the street bears wrote, in his poem 'Dorința' (Desire), of linden flowers that 'fall row upon row'.

770 metres of pavement with a bike lane on Ștefan cel Mare: a busy Ungheni street will finally have a sidewalk end to end

On a busy stretch of Ștefan cel Mare street in Ungheni — from the former biochemical plant to Podurilor street — a pavement is being built for the first time: 770 metres, with a bike lane, after which the street will have a sidewalk along its whole length. The work is done by the municipal company «Servicii Comunale Ungheni», and it is one item on a list of roads the city is financing in 2026 with borrowed money, through municipal bonds — while residents of other streets are asking for pavements too.

Six suspensions and 1,600 lei in fines in the «MAGIRUS» Cup: the return leg that decides FC Barsa's opponent loses three players

The Competition Commission of the Ungheni Territorial Football Association has validated the round of 16 of the «MAGIRUS» district Cup and sanctioned six players with suspensions and clubs with 1,600 lei in fines. Three of the red cards fell in the FC Start Pîrlița – FC Haiduc Bumbăta tie — the match that decides who will face FC Barsa Ungheni — so Sunday's return leg will be played without two Pîrlița players and one from Bumbăta. The heaviest punishment, three matches, went to an FC Barsa player.

A village in Ungheni district entered sociology textbooks 95 years ago. Gusti's Cornova returns to Ungheni — in photographs

In the summer of 1931, a team of 55 scholars led by sociologist Dimitrie Gusti descended on a village in today's Ungheni district and studied it down to the last detail — the first Bessarabian village ‘read' scientifically. The expedition's photographer, Iosif Berman, left images that made history. Ninety-five years on, a son of the village, Vasile Șoimaru, sets them beside his own photographs of today. The exhibition opens on Thursday, 25 June, at the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Library in Ungheni.
