Two tablets for two volunteers, in a town that was once the «Youth Capital» yet keeps losing its 20-year-olds

The Ungheni city hall and the bank MAIB awarded tablets to two high-school graduates — Sorina Iachimovschi and Maxim Angheluță — for their volunteering at the Municipal Youth Centre. The gesture is small, but it rests on a surprisingly dense youth infrastructure: two centres, the title of «Youth Capital» and a municipal grants programme. The question it raises is bigger than a tablet: can all this machinery keep a generation at home? National Bureau of Statistics figures show that the number of 20–24-year-olds in the district has fallen by 62% in a decade.

After 18 drownings nationwide, Ungheni District sends police and border guards on Prut river patrols

The Ungheni District Commission for Emergency Situations ordered joint patrols by police, rescuers and the border police in swimming spots along the Prut, including at weekends, and found that the municipal water rescue post must be brought up to standard. Over 25 million lei for Ungheni's Decebal street: works begin on 24 June

The Ungheni Territorial Military Centre has announced that from 22 June it is running the third stage of conscription into compulsory military service — part of a national campaign calling up to 1,200 young men. On 23 June, the Ungheni district council holds an open-outcry auction for three complexes of public buildings with their land — in Bușila, Cornești and Curtoaia. The Bușila lot bundles six structures and 0.40 hectares, with a starting price of 400,000 lei. Bids documents are due by 22 June at 10.00, and the combined floor price of the three lots tops 900,000 lei.

Four names on the monument, nine on the state list: the sons of the Ungheni district who fell on the Dniester in 1992

Thirty-four years after the June 1992 battles, the national commemoration of those who fell in the War of the Dniester can be read on the map of the Ungheni district too. At the monument, the town remembers four names, but the official state list — the “Book of Memory” — shows at least nine men born in the district who died that year, many of them at Tighina, in the very June days now being commemorated. The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued a yellow heat warning for 22 June, with highs of up to 35 °C, and IGSU comes with reminders on three fronts: water, fire and health. For people in Ungheni the stake is concrete — since the start of 2026, 18 people have drowned in Moldova, two of them children, and the town has only two swimming spots with lifeguards: the Prut beach and the one on Lake Delia.

Ten years of twinning with Cluj: the hora returns to the stage in Micul Cluj Park
