16 pairs of boots, 12 bibs and 2,000 lei: a former player kits out the Măcărești girls and FCM Ungheni's juniors

Eugen Șarpațchii, a name from the town team's squad two decades ago, has given back to the football he grew up in: he donated 16 pairs of boots and 12 training bibs to the girls of Măcărești and 2,000 lei to FCM Ungheni's U11 and U12 groups. This is no donation to a „charity case” — the girls' team of the „Elada” high school in Măcărești reached the national final of the „Speranța” tournament this spring. A former player helping those who come after him, and a village girls' side that already plays in the country's age-group elite.

Stephen the Great brought to the stage in „Micul Cluj” Park: a new show in Ungheni's „Cultural Summer”

On Wednesday evening, 2 July, the stage in „Micul Cluj” Park in Ungheni hosted the show „On the Trail of Stephen the Voivode,” dedicated to the memory of Stephen the Great and Holy. Through music, poetry, theatre and folk dance, local ensembles brought history to life before the audience. It is the latest evening in the Palace of Culture's „Cultural Summer in the Park” project, which year after year turns the park twinned with Cluj into the town's open-air stage.

Not just the municipality: a second wave of town-hall mergers is forming around Pîrlița in the Ungheni district

While the municipality of Ungheni negotiates a union with ten surrounding localities, a second nucleus of voluntary amalgamation is taking shape in the west of the district: Pîrlița, together with Agronomovca, Alexeevca, Rădenii Vechi and Teșcureni, held a second joint working meeting on the subject. Around the table were the working groups of the five town halls and the Government's territorial representative, Ion Poia. Administrative reform is no longer an abstract discussion — concrete maps are being drawn.

77 years since the largest wave of deportations: Ungheni commemorates its victims on Monday, at the Martyrs' Cross

The Ungheni municipal town hall calls on residents, on Monday, 6 July, at 10 a.m., to the Troița Martirilor Neamului (Martyrs of the Nation Cross) to commemorate the victims of the Stalinist deportations. The date is no accident: on the night of 5 to 6 July 1949, the Soviet regime lifted thousands of families from their homes across Bessarabia — the largest wave of deportations. In the Ungheni district alone, the „Book of Memory” gathers around 2,900 names of victims of totalitarianism, from more than 60 localities.

Ungheni's runners bring home three golds from the national athletics championships: Cernat and Buzulan, senior champions

At the Republic of Moldova senior athletics championships, held on 30 June–1 July at the Dinamo Stadium in Chișinău, the athletes from Ungheni came home with three gold medals and one bronze. Ecaterina Cernat won the 5000 m by more than two minutes, and Gheorghe Buzulan took the 3000 m steeplechase — both senior titles. The third gold and the bronze came from the youth races, where Ion Baran ran the fastest time in the 1500 m final. It is a haul from a small town that climbs onto the podium alongside the country's biggest sports schools.

22 July, the deadline: the Ungheni merger enters its final consultation before the vote

The ten localities set to form a single town hall around Ungheni opened a second public consultation on 2 July — this time on the concrete text of the merger decision, not on the principle. Recommendations are accepted until 22 July, and the document is public on the national platform particip.gov.md. It is the last stage before each council votes. In the villages, the first discontent is surfacing: in Costuleni, the most-liked comment compares the process to collectivisation.

600,000 lei for Ungheni's merger: Vrabie requested the first incentive and rejects the accusation of a 'forced' amalgamation

Vitalie Vrabie, mayor of the town of Ungheni, says he has already filed the request for the first financial incentive of the amalgamation — 600,000 lei, state money, calculated by the number of residents. In an interview on TVR Moldova, he rejects the accusation that the merger of the communities around the town is 'formal, forced, rushed' and maintains that the initiative came from the neighbouring mayors, not from him. The documents confirm his figure and the procedure; critics of the reform, however, point out that a 'voluntary' amalgamation, incentivised with billions and doubled by a mandatory one after 2027, is only half voluntary.
