Founder and editor-in-chief of Triunghi.md. Ion (Nalyk) Calmîș has worked at the intersection of journalism and technology in the Republic of Moldova for over two decades — a road that began in Ungheni, as a reporter at the newspaper Unghiul. He is CTO of Studio Technologies, the company behind the platforms of some of the country's most-read newsrooms (unimedia.info, jurnal.md, jurnaltv.md, tvrmoldova.md), and Head of AI Ecosystem at Esempla Systems (Moldova's GovStack infrastructure); he co-founded the newsroom Replica Media. At Triunghi.md he puts that experience — and artificial intelligence, at scale — in the service of local journalism built on source triangulation (People, Documents, Data) and on impartiality.

The quarter-final bracket of the Ungheni district «MAGIRUS» Cup 2026 is complete: eight teams, four ties, each played over two legs, home and away. FC Barsa Ungheni, through on a bye as leader of the first half of Division B, meets FC Haiduc Bumbăta, winner of the tightest tie of round one. The other three quarter-finals: Sculeni – Zagarancea, Regina Maria Ungheni – Unirea Cetireni, and Speranța Semeni – Mănoilești.

Ungheni residents pick how the Palace of Culture will look: two options, voting until Wednesday morning

Ungheni City Hall has opened a public vote on the exterior look of the Palace of Culture, now undergoing an energy-efficiency overhaul. There are two façade options — one in light tones of cream, light grey and wood, the other with a contrasting anthracite grey — and residents can choose through an online form until Wednesday, 1 July, 8.00. The works are part of a cross-border project with Iași, funded through Interreg.

A 16-year-old from Ungheni district drowned in a forbidden spot, four days after the district ordered water patrols

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations reports three drowning deaths in three days, two of them minors, all in unsupervised spots. The first case, on 26 June, is at Măcărești, in Ungheni district: a 16-year-old boy bathing with friends in a forbidden zone. The 2026 drowning toll has climbed to 31 people, 7 of them minors — up from 18 just ten days earlier. The tragedy came four days after the Ungheni Emergency Situations Commission ordered water patrols, but far from the municipality's two lifeguard-staffed beaches.

What the new Sculeni coat of arms shows: a bridge over the Prut and a golden stagecoach

The village of Sculeni, in Ungheni district, has gained its own official symbols — a coat of arms and a flag, approved by the commune council, endorsed by the National Heraldry Commission and entered in the register by presidential decree in early 2026. On the azure shield, a stone bridge crossed by a horse-drawn stagecoach points directly to Sculeni’s history as a crossing point and customs post on the Prut. The authors are state heraldist Silviu Andrieș-Tabac and Andrei Gaidașenco.

105 km to radiotherapy: a law on modern anti-cancer technologies passed its first reading, but for Ungheni the distance stays the same

On 26 June, Parliament voted in the first reading on a bill that, for the first time, defines the «particle accelerator» in law and extends its use beyond radiotherapy — towards the production of radiopharmaceuticals and research. It is a framework for authorisation and safety, not money for machines. Beyond the text, the stake for a person from Ungheni is a harsh geography: all radiotherapy in Moldova is carried out in a single place, at the Oncological Institute in Chișinău, some 105 km from Ungheni. The Ungheni District Hospital only detects and refers, and the recent wave of chemotherapy «closer to home» bypassed the district. Twenty kilometres across the Prut, Iași has radiotherapy — and free accommodation for patients.

Ungheni gets on its bike every Friday: «VeloVineri» becomes a weekly ride

The first stage of the second «VeloVineri» season drew dozens of Ungheni residents on Friday, 26 June 2026, who cycled from the city hall along the main streets to the «Lavanda Story» lavender field. And it is no longer a one-off: the city hall has announced that «VeloVineri» will continue every Friday at 4 p.m. in the coming months. Beyond the exercise and socialising, the stakes are real — a city with 311 cars per thousand residents and narrow bike lanes that wants to convince people to leave the car at home.

The measure that would allow prepaid SIM cards to be activated only on the basis of an identity document has moved a step further: on 26 June, Parliament voted it through in first reading. It is not yet law — a second reading and a one-year transition still lie ahead. Beyond the phone scams that hit the elderly, Parliament's statement invokes a second reason: anonymous cards used in cross-border smuggling. The opening round of the Ungheni district «MAGIRUS» Cup 2026 has its verdict: FC Haiduc Bumbăta beat FC Start Pîrlița 7-2 (11-5 on aggregate) and will face FC Barsa Ungheni in the second round — even though it played without a suspended player. Alongside Bumbăta, Zagarancea, Mănoilești and Regina Maria Ungheni also advanced, the last of them by a whisker, losing the return leg but holding on 5-4 on aggregate.
