Swedish support for the Ungheni merger: the ten city halls signed an agreement with SALAR International

On 24 June, the mayors of the ten localities that want to form a single municipality around Ungheni signed a framework agreement with SALAR International — the Swedish organisation running the «PACE Local» project in Moldova with Sida funding. The support, worth up to about 80,000 euros by City Hall's estimate, is to cover the new municipality's development strategy, one-stop service offices and energy audits for the schools in Semeni, Unțești and Brătuleni. But the agreement comes before the vote that will actually decide whether the merger happens.

A delegation from Ungheni district, coordinated by the “Inovații Sociale” association, is on a study visit in Cluj-Napoca devoted to dialogue with citizens and cooperation between town halls and civil society. The visit is part of an EU-funded programme and lands exactly as the district is redrawing its map of town halls — where consulting people is the very point in dispute.

23 of 33 town halls in Ungheni district fall below the reform's proposed 3,000-resident threshold

The government is preparing the most sweeping local-administration reform in years: a 3,000-resident threshold for a viable town hall, voluntary amalgamation of localities and the reduction of the 32 districts to 10. Nationwide, more than 700 decisions to launch the process have already been adopted. A newsroom calculation shows that, in Ungheni district, 23 of the 33 town halls fall below the proposed threshold. Five villages in the district are already discussing a merger, and the mayors' association is warning against forced amalgamation.
