81% of Moldova's gas comes in through Ungheni. From 5 August, a European rule changes who can reserve capacity at the border

From 5 August, the European rules on 'coupled capacity' become mandatory at the borders of the Republic of Moldova — including at Ungheni, the point through which 81.1% of imported gas entered the country in 2025. The rule is meant to open the market, but, without the European Union's fiscal architecture, around 21 of the 31 licensed suppliers would need either a place of business in Romania or a guarantee of roughly one million euros each. The head of gas trading at Energocom, Sergiu Lica, warns that small suppliers risk being pushed out of the market. For the household bill, though, this is not a 5 August shock.

In Cioropcani, a folk festival honoured the well-diggers: eight water craftsmen from four villages

On Sunday, 19 July, the village of Cioropcani hosted the folk festival “La Fântânița din Sat” (At the Village Well), organised by the Pîrlița District Culture Centre together with the town hall, under the auspices of the Ungheni District Culture and Tourism Department. Alongside traditional costumes and folk ensembles, the celebration brought an unusual guest to the stage: the well-diggers — eight craftsmen from Cioropcani, Pîrlița, Petrești and Zagarancea, the people who draw water from the ground. A few days earlier, the village’s young people had cleaned and whitewashed a well.

In parallel, the Cioropcani mayor's office, from the Sculeni cluster, has launched a bilingual online questionnaire on the draft decision and the development priorities. 145 players in Ungheni: the “Vara de Aur” chess festival, above all a children's one, is in full swing

The “Vara de Aur – 2026” chess festival brings 145 players together in six tournaments in Ungheni, between 16 and 19 July, and is organised by Ungheni City Hall. Nearly 6 in 10 participants are children. Only one tournament carries an international FIDE rating, and the only player with a classical title is an international master; no grandmaster is taking part. The Palace of Culture called the competition “one of the most important,” but the festival does not appear in the national competition calendar for 2026.

173 children at Ungheni's „Delia” kindergarten receive equipment through EQIP — on a grant, not a loan

The „Delia” nursery-kindergarten in the municipality of Ungheni is one of the 200 preschool institutions selected nationally for equipment through the „Improving the Quality of Education” project (EQIP) — position 68 on the Ministry of Education's list and one of 9 kindergartens in Ungheni raion. The institution's 173 children represent 4,1% of the children enrolled in early education in the raion. The equipment comes from a non-repayable World Bank grant, not from a loan — unlike the equipping of schools in the same project, among them the „Ion Creangă” Lyceum in Ungheni, which comes from a loan. In parallel, the municipality's strategy shows that at „Delia” the roof needs major repair, the building is not thermally insulated and access ramps are missing.
