Ungheni has 18 residential buildings left from before 1919. From a house demolished in Dănuțeni, the museum saved the carved window

A museum curator happened to walk past a house being demolished in the Dănuțeni district and called his colleagues to pull out of the rubble whatever could still be saved: a solid wood window carved on three registers, a gable with a solar rosette. The pieces are now on display at the Museum of History and Ethnography. The house was not a listed monument — nor could it have been: in the state register, the Ungheni district's list occupies positions 1573 to 1720, and not one dwelling house appears in it. The 2024 census shows how much is left of the town's old layer: 18 residential buildings erected before 1919, out of nearly 5,000.

The Dutch model shown in Ungheni: 342 municipalities instead of 1,121, but the number has not changed since 2023

Eric Geurts, mayor of the municipality of Beekdaelen in the south of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, met on Tuesday in Ungheni with the mayors of the localities going through voluntary amalgamation. The municipality he leads is itself the product of a merger: it was created on 1 January 2019 out of three municipalities that asked to be merged, through a law passed by the Dutch parliament. The Netherlands has gone from 1,121 municipalities in 1899 to 342 today — but the number has not moved since 2023, and the most-cited studies there show that mergers cut administration costs without raising spending on services, and lastingly reduced voter turnout. The public consultation on the Ungheni merger closes on Wednesday.

The City Hall says the „Heart” in Ungheni's centre is broken again and again. The police: no vandalism cases recorded

Ungheni City Hall says the installation in Independence Square, put up in August 2023, is being vandalised repeatedly, and that the police have detained several perpetrators. How much the installation cost and how much the repairs have cost so far appears in no public source. The law, by contrast, is clear: the same act can be treated as an offence, carrying 900–1,800 lei, or as vandalism — a crime with no damage threshold, carrying a fine from 27,500 lei or up to one year in prison. When the perpetrator is a minor, the bill reaches the parents, and the fine money does not return to the town's budget.

Ungheni raion asks the government for 65.5 million lei for the damage left by the 22 May rains

The raion's Commission for Emergency Situations approved on 20 July the figures for the 22 May storm: direct damage of 39.923.838 lei and a repair requirement of 67.624.095,03 lei, of which local budgets cover 2.159.750 lei — 3.2%. The request to the government, 65.473.345,03 lei, is 2.788.185,25 lei smaller than the one approved by the decision of 8 June, after the file was redone on the observations of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development. The sum is more than twice the raion's annual road budget.

34,700 vehicles registered in Ungheni raion, of which 23,527 are cars

At the newsroom's request, the Public Services Agency confirmed the raion's vehicle fleet as of 1 July 2026: 34,700 vehicles, of which 23,527 are cars — over two thirds of the total. These are the figures on which the new homologation law rests, though from 2029 it will apply only to cars brought in after that date. Who will carry out homologation in Ungheni and what it will cost remains, the ASP says, «premature» to determine.

17 drug criminal cases in Ungheni in 2026 — already more than in all of 2025

In response to a public-interest request, the Ungheni Police Inspectorate disclosed the raion's drug caseload: 12 criminal cases in 2025 and 17 since the start of 2026, young people aged 17–20 among those detained, a network that sold on Telegram, and an admission by the institution itself — that police presence on the ground ‘is insufficient’ without modern technology. What the figures and the articles of law behind them actually mean.

July 31 is not a legal deadline for mergers, but an “operational” one — the State Chancellery confirms

The date of July 31, 2026, invoked publicly as the deadline for the “voluntary” amalgamation of communes, is “an operational term set by the State Chancellery” and is not expressly provided for by Law 225/2023 — an official reply from the Ungheni Territorial Office, addressed to our newsroom, shows. Missing it does not abolish the right to merge, but it takes the locality out of the current legislative package and moves it into normative amalgamation, top-down, mandatory for town halls under 3.000 residents. In Ungheni district, the test case remains Cornești: a decision the Office considers unlawful is set to reach the courts if it is not repealed.

In Cioropcani, a folk festival honoured the well-diggers: eight water craftsmen from four villages

On Sunday, 19 July, the village of Cioropcani hosted the folk festival “La Fântânița din Sat” (At the Village Well), organised by the Pîrlița District Culture Centre together with the town hall, under the auspices of the Ungheni District Culture and Tourism Department. Alongside traditional costumes and folk ensembles, the celebration brought an unusual guest to the stage: the well-diggers — eight craftsmen from Cioropcani, Pîrlița, Petrești and Zagarancea, the people who draw water from the ground. A few days earlier, the village’s young people had cleaned and whitewashed a well.
