Founder and editor-in-chief of Triunghi.md. Ion (Nalyk) Calmîș has worked at the intersection of journalism and technology in the Republic of Moldova for over two decades — a road that began in Ungheni, as a reporter at the newspaper Unghiul. He is CTO of Studio Technologies, the company behind the platforms of some of the country's most-read newsrooms (unimedia.info, jurnal.md, jurnaltv.md, tvrmoldova.md), and Head of AI Ecosystem at Esempla Systems (Moldova's GovStack infrastructure); he co-founded the newsroom Replica Media. At Triunghi.md he puts that experience — and artificial intelligence, at scale — in the service of local journalism built on source triangulation (People, Documents, Data) and on impartiality.

FC Zagarancea wins the «Friendship Cup» in France again: 3–2 against the hosts in the final

Children from the commune of Zagarancea, Ungheni district, have won the second edition of the international youth tournament «Cupa Prieteniei» (the Friendship Cup), held between 29 June and 6 July in Montmorillon, France. FC Zagarancea beat the host team, UES Montmorillon, 3–2 in the final, repeating its win from the first edition in 2025. This is the second part of a story we told when the boys set off: a team gathered by teacher Sebastian Andriuța, which reached France through a Zagarancea–Putna–Montmorillon chain of twinnings.

Ungheni drinks from the Prut and sends its wastewater into the same river. The town hall has called in the environmental scientists of USM

On 8 July, the town hall of Ungheni signed an agreement with the Institute of Ecology and Geography of the State University of Moldova, on wastewater, ecosystem services and ecological infrastructure. The stake is concrete: the town takes its drinking water from the Prut — for more than 40,000 people — and discharges its wastewater into the basin of the same Prut, through a treatment plant that, according to the town hall's own 2018 strategy, was running on the mechanical stage only. The USM researchers called to Ungheni are precisely the ones who measure how much such a plant degrades the river downstream.

Vasile Vasilache, the writer from Unțești: 100 years since his birth, a censored novel and a silver coin

On 4 July 2026, 100 years passed since the birth — in the village of Unțești, Ungheni district — of Vasile Vasilache, one of the most original prose writers of Bessarabia's 1960s generation. His novel «Povestea cu cocoșul roșu» (The Tale of the Red Rooster, 1966) also brought him ostracism: the second part was struck down by Soviet censorship, and the book appeared in full only in 1986. For the centenary, the state honours him with a silver coin, a symposium at the Academy and an exhibition at the National Library — all in Chișinău. In Ungheni, the living trace is the lower-secondary school in his native village that bears his name.

The Ungheni merger reaches the numbers: a consolidated budget estimated at 350 million lei

The Joint Working Group of the ten localities set to form a single town hall analysed, on 8 July, the assets, the staffing and the budgets — a consolidated budget estimated at about 350 million lei. In the same days, the district's first institutional voice of opposition is heard: the town hall of Cornești asks 'if we abolish the town halls, will the villages flourish?' — even though its own town hall is running the amalgamation questionnaires.

Ungheni doesn't have Moldova's most expensive water: at 40.01 lei, it pays under half of Glodeni

Dozens of Ungheni residents wrote, under the news of the price hike, that the town supposedly has the most expensive water in Moldova. The tariffs approved by ANRE show the opposite: at 40.01 lei/m³, only seven towns charge less, while at least nineteen — from Cantemir to Glodeni — charge more, some nearly double. The difference comes from the number of consumers and the water source: Ungheni draws it, treated, from the Prut, while towns like Rîșcani pump it cheaply from artesian wells. And the sense that we pay the most comes from something else — the tariff has just risen, eleven days after we were promised it would stay unchanged.

Ungheni District Youth Council collects books for a community library, through July 25

The young district councillors have launched a book-donation drive: anyone with volumes in good condition — for children, teenagers or adults — can offer them through a message on the council's Facebook page, until July 25. The books go to a community library that the announcement does not name. The gesture lands on a local nerve: the district's book stock has thinned by a quarter over two decades.

A €375,000 project with the nurses of Iași would bring the Ungheni District Hospital emergency equipment and a unit for medical waste

The Ungheni District Hospital announces that it is a partner in a cross-border project for responding to health crises — an outfit of emergency-care equipment and a unit for neutralising hazardous medical waste. The official document shows, however, that this is a provisional selection, with a European grant of at most €375,438.90 for the whole partnership: the contract has not yet been signed.
