The traditional houses of Ungheni's villages are vanishing. Documenting them has become “an emergency”

A workshop organized by the Culture and Tourism Department at Petrești, on 23 July, raised a problem larger than a single day of sessions: the peasant houses of clay, wood and reed thatch in the district's villages are being lost, against a backdrop of depopulation of more than 22% in a decade, and the ordinary ones hold no monument status. What most often remains is only what someone manages to document — a method with deep roots right here, at Cornova, where Dimitrie Gusti's team was already “reading” the village back in 1931.

On Wednesday evening, 2 July, the stage in „Micul Cluj” Park in Ungheni hosted the show „On the Trail of Stephen the Voivode,” dedicated to the memory of Stephen the Great and Holy. Through music, poetry, theatre and folk dance, local ensembles brought history to life before the audience. It is the latest evening in the Palace of Culture's „Cultural Summer in the Park” project, which year after year turns the park twinned with Cluj into the town's open-air stage.

Ungheni twins with Izmit in Turkey and opens a world folklore office at its Palace of Culture

Quietly, Ungheni has climbed onto the map of cultural diplomacy: in May it hosted Moldova's first international caravan of the World Folklore Union (IGF), opened an office of the organisation at its Palace of Culture, and signed a twinning agreement with Izmit, a city in Turkey. Now the director of the Palace of Culture, Silvia Zagoreanu — Moldova's representative in IGF — has presented the results to the union's Board of Directors, meeting in Poland.
