17 medals for Ungheni at the “Pascaru” freestyle wrestling tournament in Semeni

The athletes of the Ungheni Sports School won 17 medals — 8 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze — at the international “Nicolae and Andrian Pascaru” freestyle wrestling tournament, hosted on Sunday, 9 August, by the village of Semeni in Zagarancea commune. The sixth edition of the children's and juniors' competition brought together athletes from five countries — the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, Estonia and the United States — and had a commemorative character. The tournament is organized by the Ungheni Sports School and the Zagarancea commune town hall, with the support of the Ungheni District Council.

412,000 lei and three bids for the asphalted access to the post office and the cultural centre in Semeni

The village's community page announced last week that the access to the post office, the library and the cultural centre had been surfaced with asphalt, thanking the commune hall, HelpAge Moldova and the District Council. The procurement documents show the rest: the Zagarancea commune hall put out to tender a road section with access to the village post office and cultural centre, three firms submitted bids, and the contract was awarded to SRL “Balt-Cons” with 344,000 lei excluding VAT, below the estimate of 403,000 — that is 412,000 lei including VAT. The stake is at the other end: in Zagarancea commune, one in five residents has reached retirement age.

How water climbs from the Prut up to the hill of Boghenii Vechi: the commune has brought its water main into all four of its villages

The Boghenii Noi commune hall announced on 22 July that it had completed connecting the village of Boghenii Vechi to the water main, including the 'hill zone' — the hardest part to supply, because the water has to be pumped more than 200 metres higher than the source. The water comes from Zagarancea, from the Prut river, the same source that also supplies the town of Ungheni. In official statistics, the village shows a public water network only from 2025: 3.1 km and 59 connected dwellings. It is a small piece of a national process that, in 2024, delivered 507 of the 561 kilometres of new network precisely in villages.

July 4, in France: children from Ungheni district play in the “Friendship Cup”, alongside Ukraine and Romania

FC Zagarancea, the team of a commune in Ungheni district, represents the Republic of Moldova on July 4 in Montmorillon, France, at the international youth tournament the “Friendship Cup” — alongside the French hosts, Romania and Ukraine. The boys, gathered by physical-education teacher Sebastian Andriuța, got there through a chain of town twinnings: Zagarancea twinned with Putna in January 2025, and Putna has been linked with Montmorillon since 2013. At the first edition, held last year in Putna itself, the team from Zagarancea won.
