At Ungheni's former boarding school, pickleball and badminton courts are taking shape — after €50,000 from Maramureș

Ungheni District Council is building a sports facility in the yard of the town's former boarding school, at the Educational Centre. After the mini-football pitch built in 2024 with €50,000 from the Maramureș County Council — now used in the 'Prietenia' summer camp — badminton and pickleball courts are 'in the final stretch.' A construction-site board indicates a value of about 1.77 million lei for this stage.

On Friday, Ungheni takes to its bikes outside City Hall: 'VeloVineri' returns to a town with 311 cars per 1,000 residents

Ungheni City Hall and the Tourist Information Centre are holding the second edition of 'VeloVineri' on Friday, 26 June 2026, at 4 p.m. — a bike ride starting in front of City Hall. The event is part of the European project CycleRight (Interreg Europe), in which Ungheni is a partner town. Beyond the ride, the stakes are serious: a town with narrow cycle lanes and rising car ownership wants to convince its residents to leave the car at home.

Eggs pulled from shelves in Ungheni district: food safety agency urges return of batch coded 3MD UN 015 over Salmonella

Moldova's National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has ordered the recall of a batch of eggs produced by DANT-AGRO LLC in the village of Pârlița, Ungheni district, after Salmonella Typhimurium was detected in samples from the farm's laying hens. Consumers are urged not to eat eggs marked 3MD UN 015 with a best-before date up to and including 20 July 2026, and to return them to the shop with their receipt. It is not the first such alert at the same farm: an identical one occurred in 2022.

Moldova's flag on the top step in Iași: five gymnasts from Ungheni take first place at «Summer Dance Rhythm»

Five members of the «Santé Gym» club in Ungheni climbed to the top of the podium at the «Summer Dance Rhythm» international dance contest, held on 20 June in Iași. With their «Zânele Pădurii» (Forest Fairies) routine, the girls won first place at a competition across the Prut — in the city twinned with Ungheni for ten years now. A small but living thread of the friendship between the two banks.

Ungheni district learns from Buzău how not to miss EU money for water, sewerage and roads

The president of Ungheni district, Dionisie Ternovschi, took part in a working session where a delegation from the Romanian city of Buzău, led by mayor Constantin Toma, shared Romania's experience in attracting European funds. The meeting, organised by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development together with deputy PM Vladimir Bolea, focused on the lessons of the pre-accession period — preparing projects and feasibility studies in good time. Ternovschi says the priorities the district wants to address with such funds are water, sewerage and roads in Ungheni's villages.

Swedish support for the Ungheni merger: the ten city halls signed an agreement with SALAR International

On 24 June, the mayors of the ten localities that want to form a single municipality around Ungheni signed a framework agreement with SALAR International — the Swedish organisation running the «PACE Local» project in Moldova with Sida funding. The support, worth up to about 80,000 euros by City Hall's estimate, is to cover the new municipality's development strategy, one-stop service offices and energy audits for the schools in Semeni, Unțești and Brătuleni. But the agreement comes before the vote that will actually decide whether the merger happens.

Public-sector pay would rise 10–30% from September: what the new law, still in consultation, would mean for the thousands of Ungheni people on the state payroll

The government has put out for public consultation the draft of a new public-sector pay law — increases of 10 to 30% for around 170,000 employees, from 1 September 2026. 'Up to 30%' is the ceiling, not the rule: the biggest rises go to the categories left furthest behind. For a district like Ungheni, where the average wage is almost 3,700 lei below the national average and thousands work in schools, hospitals and town halls, the reform hits the family budget directly. But it is still only a draft — and a parallel reform trims leave days.

Ungheni would be the start of Moldova's first European-gauge railway: the study of the 140 km/h line to Chișinău has begun in Brussels

In Brussels, at the launch of the EU's Connectivity Agenda Platform, the Republic of Moldova, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank recorded the start of preparing the feasibility study for an entirely new electrified railway with European gauge on the Ungheni–Chișinău route. Trains designed for at least 140 km/h, able to run without changing axles at the border — and the starting point is Ungheni itself. It is the step that carries inland the electrified line from Iași we wrote about last week. For now it is only a study: the real cost and timeline will come out of it.
