Sculeni wiped out a 0–4, but the «MAGIRUS» Cup final in Ungheni is Mănoilești – Unirea Cetireni

The return legs of the semifinals in the Ungheni District Football Cup, the «MAGIRUS», were played on Sunday, 26 July, and settled both finalists. FC Mănoilești won 5–1 at Bumbăta and goes into the final 7–1 on aggregate. In the other semifinal, FC Sculeni led 4–0 at Cetireni at the end of the 90 minutes and had wiped out the entire first-leg lead, but FC Unirea Cetireni qualified on penalties, 5–3.

A 17-year-old girl died in an ATV crash in Stolniceni. Police are checking who gave her the vehicle

A 17-year-old girl died on Saturday evening in Stolniceni, Ungheni district, after the ATV she was driving ran off the road and hit an electricity pole. Police have opened a criminal case and say they will establish 'who allowed her access' to the vehicle. Contrary to a widespread impression, age alone does not make driving a quadricycle illegal — a B1 licence can be obtained from the age of 16; the investigation will clarify whether the teenager held a licence and whether the ATV was permitted on public roads. When the answer is 'no', the law does not look first at the driver, but at the person who entrusted her with the vehicle.

Whose money pays for the school renovations: in Costuleni, the district presents millions from the government as its own investments

The Ungheni District Council presented on Facebook the investments in the Todirești and Costuleni gymnasiums. The figures check out in documents — but at Costuleni, out of the roughly six-million-lei package, the district's own money is only the paving (531 thousand); the rest — the thermal insulation and the sanitary facilities — comes from the government and from the Ministry of Education. At Todirești, by contrast, the money really is the district's. All of it, five months before the reform takes these schools out of the District Council's subordination.

Ten localities, 42,000 residents: Ungheni Municipal Council votes to amalgamate into a single municipality

On July 24, the Ungheni Municipal Council met in an extraordinary session and, according to the Mayor's Office, adopted the decisions that open the way toward 'a new model of administrative organization' — the city's own step in the voluntary amalgamation with nine neighboring localities, one of the largest clusters of its kind in the country: 10 administrative-territorial units and about 42,316 residents, with Ungheni as the center. The text of the municipal decision had not yet been published in the state register at the time of this article.

Twice a national "Youth Capital," Ungheni dedicates a week to a shrinking youth

From 10 to 16 August, the Ungheni city hall and the Municipal Youth Centre are holding "Youth Week" (ZiT 2026) around International Youth Day on 12 August. Ungheni has good reason to call itself a "city of youth" — it held the national title of Youth Capital twice, in 2011 and 2023. But the celebration takes place in a district the young leave first: the number of people aged 15–34 has halved over the past decade, faster than the national average. Mihai's birthday wish: 43.287 lei to sterilise 30 dogs from the Ungheni shelter

For his birthday, at 30, Mihai Lazar — a veterinarian at the AlgaVet clinic in Ungheni and president of the ALGA association — made a single wish: to raise 30.000 lei to sterilise 30 dogs from the Ungheni shelter. The wish came true and then some: 43.287,20 lei. Beyond the warm gesture, the stake is one of public health — in a district that in 2025 was among the hardest hit by rabies in the country, and where sterilisation, coupled with vaccination, is the method international bodies recommend instead of mass killing.

The traditional houses of Ungheni's villages are vanishing. Documenting them has become “an emergency”

A workshop organized by the Culture and Tourism Department at Petrești, on 23 July, raised a problem larger than a single day of sessions: the peasant houses of clay, wood and reed thatch in the district's villages are being lost, against a backdrop of depopulation of more than 22% in a decade, and the ordinary ones hold no monument status. What most often remains is only what someone manages to document — a method with deep roots right here, at Cornova, where Dimitrie Gusti's team was already “reading” the village back in 1931.
