18 in favour, 11 abstentions: five villages lose their health centre, and the decision does not say what happens to the doctor

On 18 June, Ungheni District Council voted to merge the district's health centres — from 11 down to 6. Mănoilești, Valea Mare, Cetireni, Rădenii Vechi and Petrești lose their own institution. The plan is a mechanical application of a national threshold: the centres that survive are exactly those with more than 6,000 people on their lists. But it was the only contested vote of the whole sitting — 11 of the 29 councillors present abstained — and at that same sitting the council extended the contracts of the heads of two centres it was in the act of dissolving.

Why Telegram drug networks look for couriers who are exactly 18 — police detained one of them in Ungheni

The Anti-Drug Directorate detained him at his home in Ungheni after about a month of surveillance: police say he collected drugs in bulk, portioned them in a rented flat in Chișinău and hid them around the city for a shop that sells on Telegram. Police announced the value of the goods — over 50,000 lei — but not the quantity in grams, the one figure that decides whether the sentence starts at 2 years or at 7. He is the second 18-year-old announced in twelve days with exactly the same pattern, and the Criminal Code shows why this link in the chain is sought at precisely this age.

Ungheni City Hall advertised, 16 months ago, the very job for which it is now getting an American volunteer for free

On 13 July, City Hall announced that Megan Knox — a Peace Corps volunteer who came from Seattle — is joining the team for two years, to digitalise its services. The natural question is why not a Polytechnic graduate, from Ungheni. The answer is in City Hall's own archive: on 21 March 2025 it advertised the post of “IT specialist (in Digital Transformation)” — and it asked not for engineering, but for public administration, economics or law. No result of that competition was ever published, and the mayor says now that he still wants the person. City Hall's best-paid specialist earns 8,960 lei a month; the average in IT services is 49,654. And the job itself — “digitalisation specialist” — is not allowed to exist, as a title, in the staffing schedule of any city hall in Moldova.

The man who bought a garage to build a weightlifting gym. Two world champions came out of it

Gheorghe Gorencu worked six years in Spain, came back to Unțești and bought a garage that was up for sale in the village, to turn it into a weightlifting gym. He never charged rent, paid the electricity out of his own salary and took no money from the children. National-team lists name him as the coach of Nicoleta Cojocaru — from the age of eleven — and of Danu Secrieru. He died in 2023. Since 2025, the village of Unțești no longer appears at all in the national weightlifting squad lists.

The Micul Cluj Park stage belonged to the children: a free evening of gymnastics and music in Ungheni

On Thursday evening, 9 July, gymnasts from two local studios and young soloists held the audience captive on the Micul Cluj Park stage in Ungheni, at a new evening of the „Vara Culturală-n Parc” (Cultural Summer in the Park) project. Beyond the show, it is about something concrete for the town's families — a free, open-air cultural programme that runs all summer and, this year, carries extra weight: with the House of Culture building going into renovation, the town's main hall has moved outdoors.

The House of Culture in Măcărești is crumbling — and with it the «Hora cu cinci fete» mosaic the state doesn't list as a monument

In the House of Culture of Măcărești village, built in 1972 and closed since 2005, survives «Hora cu cinci fete» (the round dance of five girls) — a monumental mosaic that also gave its name to a book by writer Ștefan Susai. A recent Moldova 1 reportage and a public appeal to the Minister of Culture put the ruined building back in the spotlight. Less has been said, though, that neither the mosaic nor the building appears in the state register of protected monuments — and that a village which drew over 8 million lei through «European Village» for a kindergarten and water lacks the roughly 30 million the mayor puts on paper for restoration.

In Ungheni, state institutions took to their bikes for «VeloVineri», riding the newly rehabilitated Burebista street

On Friday, 10 July 2026, Ungheni's weekly «VeloVineri» ride gathered representatives of the town's deconcentrated institutions, brought together by the head of the Territorial Office, Ion Poia. Mayor Vitalie Vrabie gave the start outside the town hall, and the route took the group to the Dănuțeni neighbourhood, along the newly rehabilitated Burebista street — the same one where the administration launched works worth over 10 million lei this summer. Two weeks after the town hall promised a ride every Friday, the initiative shows it has held up.
