Sculeni commune’s City Hall has finished installing lighting on the mini-football pitch in the village of Blândești, Ungheni district. The pitch can now be used in the evening as well, when the summer heat eases. The lighting fixtures were donated by the company Free.on and the “Casa Tatălui” Association.
«Brain Power», the robotics team of the «Elada» theoretical high school in the village of Măcărești, and «Techno Storm», from the District Centre for Educational Support and Performance in Ungheni, are competing at the «Istanbul Premier Event» — an international FIRST Tech Challenge competition held from 26 to 28 June with 74 teams. Of the four Republic of Moldova teams in Istanbul, two come from Ungheni district. For «Brain Power», which won the Design Award at the national championship in Chișinău in February, this is a first international outing.
Five members of the «Santé Gym» club in Ungheni climbed to the top of the podium at the «Summer Dance Rhythm» international dance contest, held on 20 June in Iași. With their «Zânele Pădurii» (Forest Fairies) routine, the girls won first place at a competition across the Prut — in the city twinned with Ungheni for ten years now. A small but living thread of the friendship between the two banks.
The Ungheni city hall and the bank MAIB awarded tablets to two high-school graduates — Sorina Iachimovschi and Maxim Angheluță — for their volunteering at the Municipal Youth Centre. The gesture is small, but it rests on a surprisingly dense youth infrastructure: two centres, the title of «Youth Capital» and a municipal grants programme. The question it raises is bigger than a tablet: can all this machinery keep a generation at home? The Graduates' Ball returns to Ungheni on 18 June 2026, in Independence Square — a ceremony for the young people finishing high school, organised by the city hall together with the district council and the Education Directorate. Last year, the stage in the town centre gathered the graduates of all eight high schools in the district. Beyond the music and the diplomas, the event carries a stake the numbers state bluntly: Ungheni is losing its young people — for every class that climbs the stage, another has already left.
The Art School in Ungheni held its 2026 graduation: 80 children and teenagers (74 from the fourth-year classes and 6 from the fifth year) finished their years of drawing, painting and sculpture, according to the City Hall. The school bears the name of Raisa Cojocaru, who led it for almost four decades, and has a tradition of over 57 years. And the stakes are higher than a ceremony: in a district that has lost more than half of its young people in twelve years, every generation trained at home counts.
A creative workshop at the Palace of Culture gathered young people in Ungheni around four techniques with surprising stories: the Japanese folding of paper, the paper filigree once rolled on goose quills, the «painting» from pressed flowers once practised by samurai, and découpage. Beyond a pleasant afternoon, the workshop says something about what the town still offers its young people — in a district they are leaving.
On Thursday, 25 June, a youth NGO and volunteers run a job fair for young people in Ungheni. The event lasts three hours; the problem it touches has lasted a decade. The number of 15–34-year-olds in the district has halved since 2014, wages are almost a fifth below the national average, and nearly a third of the region's young people are neither in school nor at work. And yet jobs do exist — the paradox that, in fact, tells the whole story.
