Ungheni education trade union joins national protest over salaries

The Executive Bureau of the district's education trade-union structure, led by Lilia Savin, decided on 10 August to back the protest calendar announced by the Federation of Education and Science Trade Unions — from picketing the Government on 19 August to a possible boycott of celebrations on 5 October. The reason: the salary increases promised to teachers for 1 September have become uncertain. What the trade union demands, what the Government answers, and what it means for the district's nearly 900 teachers.

All 7 kindergartens in Ungheni close between 17 and 26 August for sanitation and repairs

All seven kindergartens in the municipality of Ungheni suspend their activity from 17 to 26 August, according to a mayor's order. During these ten days the premises undergo sanitation, pest control and routine repairs, ahead of the new school year. The decision rests on the Regulation on enrolling children in preschool institutions, approved in 2023. One question raised by parents in the comments remains: what those who work are to do with their children during this period.

The „Vasile Alecsandri” Lyceum in Ungheni stays 7th in the country at the BAC

The ranking published by the Ministry of Education and the National Agency for Curriculum and Evaluation places the „Vasile Alecsandri” Theoretical Lyceum in Ungheni 7th out of 312 theoretical lyceums, with an exam average of 8,81 and a 100% pass rate — the second time in a row in the same position and the only lyceum from outside Chișinău to reach the top ten. But the document says something else about the raion as well: six of Ungheni's eight lyceums obtained better averages than last year, yet three fell in the ranking. The explanation lies in the way the list is ordered — by pass rate, not by average.

Nichita Țurea, from «Vasile Alecsandri» in Ungheni, made Moldova's team at the International Biology Olympiad

Nichita Țurea, a graduate of the «Vasile Alecsandri» Theoretical Lyceum in Ungheni, was one of the four students who represented the Republic of Moldova at the 37th International Biology Olympiad, which ended on 19 July in Vilnius. The team came back with two bronze medals and one honourable mention — all three won by his teammates from Chișinău. For Nichita, selection to the national team comes after a Baccalaureate average of 10 and four years of prizes at the national biology olympiads.

173 children at Ungheni's „Delia” kindergarten receive equipment through EQIP — on a grant, not a loan

The „Delia” nursery-kindergarten in the municipality of Ungheni is one of the 200 preschool institutions selected nationally for equipment through the „Improving the Quality of Education” project (EQIP) — position 68 on the Ministry of Education's list and one of 9 kindergartens in Ungheni raion. The institution's 173 children represent 4,1% of the children enrolled in early education in the raion. The equipment comes from a non-repayable World Bank grant, not from a loan — unlike the equipping of schools in the same project, among them the „Ion Creangă” Lyceum in Ungheni, which comes from a loan. In parallel, the municipality's strategy shows that at „Delia” the roof needs major repair, the building is not thermally insulated and access ramps are missing.

Ungheni's „Ion Creangă” high school is being renovated with Norwegian money: the district's second model school

Not just „Eminescu”. A second school in the Ungheni district — the „Ion Creangă” Theoretical High School in the Dănuțeni neighbourhood — is being renovated as part of the national model-schools network. The building is being refurbished with money from the Norwegian Government, through UNDP Moldova, while the furniture and IT equipment come from the World Bank. Works began in 2025 and are still under way — at the last official visit, the roof was being repaired. The amount allocated to the school and its number of pupils have not been made public.

Half a million lei for a village school: the state repairs the Boghenii Noi gymnasium

The Ministry of Education and Research will invest 500,000 lei in the „Anatol Popovici” gymnasium in Boghenii Noi for repair works this summer, the Ungheni District Council announced. It is state money going straight into a rural school in the Culei area — a concrete figure and a clear funder, which is usually missing from announcements about repairs in educational institutions. What exactly the sum covers was not detailed.

73 empty teaching posts and ever fewer nurses: what the scholarship reform really brings Ungheni

The government has approved raising scholarships by at least 40% from 1 September, with the biggest increases in medicine, education and STEAM — exactly the professions Ungheni district lacks most acutely, with 73 vacant teaching posts and 94 fewer nurses in eight years. Except that the lever sits with the universities in Chișinău: students at the town's two colleges get a much smaller rise, of 1,280–1,495 lei, and a scholarship student is never obliged to end up at a teaching post in Sculeni.
