Ungheni's new market rules could go to public debate: fees, schedule, spots for producers

On 21 August, at an ordinary session, the Ungheni Municipal Council has a proposal on its agenda: initiating a public consultation on the operating concept of the new agri-food market on Decebal Street. If the council adopts it, residents could intervene, under the law, in the market's rules — administration, tariffs, opening hours, priority for local producers — before they are set. We explain what the council is set to discuss and how a public consultation unfolds.

800 metres of new pavement on Ștefan cel Mare, almost ready for Ungheni's City Days

On Ștefan cel Mare street in Ungheni, the busy stretch between the former biochemical plant and Podurilor street is getting a pavement — the first on this section, according to City Hall: about 800 metres long, 2 metres wide. The work, done by the municipal company «Servicii Comunale Ungheni», has reached its final stretch and should be ready for the city's festival at the end of August; the road markings and the shaping of the shoulder still remain. The pavement is one item on a list of roads the city is paying for in 2026 with money borrowed through municipal bonds.

Bridge to Lake Delia island in Ungheni rebuilt after May flood

Less than three months after Lake Delia overflowed and destroyed the footbridge to Ungheni's leisure island, the Municipality has announced a new cable-stayed suspension bridge with an ash-wood deck and a resurfaced access road. Mayor Vitalie Vrabie inspected the site on 13 August; the aim is for the island to be ready in September. The announcement comes with a safety warning for parents: the bridge "is not a swing." What was rebuilt, how the work fits into the larger waterfront project, and the state of the lake's water.

Gabriel Mironiuc, an 11-year-old pupil at the “Alexandr Pușkin” Lyceum in Ungheni, was the best-placed player from the Republic of Moldova in his section at the “Open Bohumín” international chess festival, held in July in the Czech Republic. Third rabies outbreak in Ungheni district in two weeks: restrictions in Costuleni

A case of rabies has been confirmed in the village of Costuleni, Ungheni district — the third outbreak in the district after Rezina and Măgurele, in less than two weeks. Decision No. 1/E of 11 August, the first of the newly established crisis-management commission, approved a plan of 14 anti-epizootic measures: a census of animals within five days, a halt to the movement of animals in the village for 30 days, emergency vaccination and stepped-up hunting of foxes and jackals. The restrictions lift 30 days after the last case. Rabies vaccination of dogs and cats remains compulsory across the district, and any bite means a trip to the doctor the same day — the prophylaxis is free.

Lake Delia water is class V for the third summer running — the municipal beach stays open

After the fish die-off in early August, Ungheni City Hall requested a water sample from Lake Delia. The result, released by the Public Health Centre on August 11: water unfit for bathing — class V (the lowest) by chemical parameters. It is the third year in a row with class V results (2024, 2025, 2026), and the area has no sanitary authorization and is not on the monitoring calendar. The municipal beach stays open, with lifeguards. What this means for anyone who swims there — and where you can swim safely.

The Ungheni station, promised to the City Hall: an announcement without an act, money or deadline

On August 11, in Ungheni, Vladimir Bolea, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, announced that the bus and railway station will be transferred to the City Hall and turned into a multimodal hub, and the mayor, Vitalie Vrabie, promised swift investments. What that means, concretely: the public registers contain no decision — neither of the Municipal Council nor of the Government — on the transfer; the ministry's official press release from the same day does not even mention the station; and the contested routes from „Slavena” continue to depart from the same parking lot. Why a sentence spoken on the ground changes, for now, nothing on substance.

What separates illegal border crossing from illegal residence — and why two foreigners are in custody at Ungheni

On August 7, the court ordered public custody and a five-year entry ban for two citizens of Bangladesh, detained by the Border Police during an attempted illegal border crossing in the Ungheni district area, as part of efforts to counter a network allegedly involving Moldovan citizens as well. It is the second case of this kind reported at Ungheni's border in six weeks. We explain what differs, in law, between illegal border crossing — a crime — and breaching the residence regime, a mere administrative offence, and what comes next for the two.
