Founder and editor-in-chief of Triunghi.md. Ion (Nalyk) Calmîș has worked at the intersection of journalism and technology in the Republic of Moldova for over two decades — a road that began in Ungheni, as a reporter at the newspaper Unghiul. He is CTO of Studio Technologies, the company behind the platforms of some of the country's most-read newsrooms (unimedia.info, jurnal.md, jurnaltv.md, tvrmoldova.md), and Head of AI Ecosystem at Esempla Systems (Moldova's GovStack infrastructure); he co-founded the newsroom Replica Media. At Triunghi.md he puts that experience — and artificial intelligence, at scale — in the service of local journalism built on source triangulation (People, Documents, Data) and on impartiality.
Ungheni City Hall reopens the construction site on Decebal street, in the Tineretului neighbourhood, on 24 June. A 1,003-metre stretch leading to the free economic zone, planned since 2022, is being rebuilt for more than 25 million lei, mostly from government funds.
Parliament has passed in first reading an NCFM law that will force banks to display their fees in a standardized document, create a public fee-comparison website and guarantee everyone the right to a “payment account with basic features” — free of charge for the financially vulnerable, chiefly pensioners. In the Ungheni district, home to 19,709 pensioners, where nearly two thirds of people live in villages and one in four is over 60, the stake is financial inclusion: only 55.5% of adults in Moldova still have a bank account, down from 64.2% in 2021. Note: this is only the first reading, and the provisions take effect only 12–24 months after publication.
The Ungheni Territorial Military Centre has announced that from 22 June it is running the third stage of conscription into compulsory military service — part of a national campaign calling up to 1,200 young men. Beyond the administrative notice, National Bureau of Statistics figures show how shrinking the recruitment pool is: the number of men aged 20–24 in the Ungheni district has fallen by almost two thirds in a decade. Here is what recruits and their families need to know — including the right to deferral and to civilian service.
The government in Bucharest has approved the technical-economic indicators for electrifying the railway line between Iași and the border with the Republic of Moldova — the administrative step that opens the way to the design-and-build tender. It is the Romanian half of a cross-border project that will give the Republic of Moldova its first kilometre of electrified railway, right through Ungheni and over the 'Eiffel' bridge across the Prut. For a border-gateway district, it is the most concrete railway promise yet.
On 23 June, the Ungheni district council holds an open-outcry auction for three complexes of public buildings with their land — in Bușila, Cornești and Curtoaia. The Bușila lot bundles six structures and 0.40 hectares, with a starting price of 400,000 lei. Bids documents are due by 22 June at 10.00, and the combined floor price of the three lots tops 900,000 lei.
At the government, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu met farmers and spoke about access to finance, seasonal labour, taxation and the insolvency law. It sounds abstract — until you put it on the map of the Ungheni district: nearly 17,000 hectares of cereals, 10,000 of sunflower, a sector grown to 30,000 hectares, yet carried on the backs of small producers. And on the ground, in Pârlița and Măgurele, town halls are recording drought damage and striking inactive farms off the registers.
Thirty-four years after the June 1992 battles, the national commemoration of those who fell in the War of the Dniester can be read on the map of the Ungheni district too. At the monument, the town remembers four names, but the official state list — the “Book of Memory” — shows at least nine men born in the district who died that year, many of them at Tighina, in the very June days now being commemorated. Ungheni City Hall moves a section of route No. 5 onto Strada Națională, from the „Apă-Canal Ungheni” utility to Vasile Alecsandri street. The line, launched on 1 June with five Mercedes minibuses, costs 6 lei a ride and is run by a company wholly owned by the municipal council.
The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued a yellow heat warning for 22 June, with highs of up to 35 °C, and IGSU comes with reminders on three fronts: water, fire and health. For people in Ungheni the stake is concrete — since the start of 2026, 18 people have drowned in Moldova, two of them children, and the town has only two swimming spots with lifeguards: the Prut beach and the one on Lake Delia.
