What the new Sculeni coat of arms shows: a bridge over the Prut and a golden stagecoach

The village of Sculeni, in Ungheni district, has gained its own official symbols — a coat of arms and a flag, approved by the commune council, endorsed by the National Heraldry Commission and entered in the register by presidential decree in early 2026. On the azure shield, a stone bridge crossed by a horse-drawn stagecoach points directly to Sculeni’s history as a crossing point and customs post on the Prut. The authors are state heraldist Silviu Andrieș-Tabac and Andrei Gaidașenco.

Prepaid SIM cards only with an ID pass first reading: at the Ungheni border, the stakes go beyond the pensioner scammed by phone

The measure that would allow prepaid SIM cards to be activated only on the basis of an identity document has moved a step further: on 26 June, Parliament voted it through in first reading. It is not yet law — a second reading and a one-year transition still lie ahead. Beyond the phone scams that hit the elderly, Parliament's statement invokes a second reason: anonymous cards used in cross-border smuggling. And Ungheni is the gateway district on the Prut, where real smuggling cases have already turned up seized phones and SIM cards.

At Sculeni, the farmers' protest blocked the border crossing on 25 June, reopened only toward evening

The farmers' protest against the rise in agricultural VAT reached the border of Ungheni district on 25 June: farm machinery blocked access to the Sculeni border crossing, along with three other customs points and several national roads. According to the Border Police, traffic at Sculeni was restored only around 6 p.m. It is the official-source confirmation of what we had flagged as possible: the protest touched Ungheni directly.

From a 1,000-lei fine to 15 days in jail: what the new child-support law changes for parents in Ungheni

Parliament has adopted a law replacing the up-to-1,000-lei fine for parents who fail to pay child support with up to 15 days of arrest, unpaid community work and a ban on leaving the country — enforced right at the border. For a border district like Ungheni, with the Sculeni crossing and hundreds of divorces a year, the border provision is no abstraction. Nationwide, only 4.7% of parents pay support regularly.

A home in Sculeni, part of a reform moving people out of institutions into the community

One of the eight community homes for people with severe intellectual disabilities in Moldova is in Sculeni, Ungheni district. It is part of a cross-border project funded by the European Union, which is modernising 12 social buildings, and in June the homes' staff were trained in ethics, person-centred care and crisis de-escalation. Behind it lies a quiet but profound reform: moving people out of large institutions into small homes in the community. It is advancing slowly — and that is why it is worth watching.
