The measure that would allow prepaid SIM cards to be activated only on the basis of an identity document has moved a step further: on 26 June, Parliament voted it through in first reading. It is not yet law — a second reading and a one-year transition still lie ahead. Beyond the phone scams that hit the elderly, Parliament's statement invokes a second reason: anonymous cards used in cross-border smuggling. And Ungheni is the gateway district on the Prut, where real smuggling cases have already turned up seized phones and SIM cards.

A national project funded from the state budget, within the EU-backed Growth Plan, will delimit and register public property in 275 localities across Moldova by 2028. The cadastre agency's leadership visited the Ungheni district between 16 and 26 June. The official statement speaks of «275 town halls», but the government document says otherwise — «localities»: from the Ungheni district, 16 of its 74 localities are covered. The stake is not technical: without a correctly registered plot or building, a town hall cannot tax it, pledge it, sell it or legally develop it.

For Ungheni, where accommodation capacity has fallen to a third of its 2008 level, the practical question is through which doors any of this money could actually reach here.

Teachers left without a school when their institution is reorganized will be bused to their new workplace at the state's expense — a measure the government approved on 24 June. The government has put out for public consultation the draft of a new public-sector pay law — increases of 10 to 30% for around 170,000 employees, from 1 September 2026. A free bank account for pensioners and fees in plain sight: the law affecting 19,709 Ungheni pensioners clears its first vote

Parliament has passed in first reading an NCFM law that will force banks to display their fees in a standardized document, create a public fee-comparison website and guarantee everyone the right to a “payment account with basic features” — free of charge for the financially vulnerable, chiefly pensioners. In the Ungheni district, home to 19,709 pensioners, where nearly two thirds of people live in villages and one in four is over 60, the stake is financial inclusion: only 55.5% of adults in Moldova still have a bank account, down from 64.2% in 2021.
