An expired technical inspection will automatically suspend your registration — what changes for drivers in Ungheni

On 9 July, Parliament passed, in the second reading, a law that automatically suspends the registration of vehicles with an expired periodic technical inspection or with dangerous defects. When the inspection expires, the suspension applies immediately; for defects, after 30 days during which you may only drive to a garage. Anyone driving with a suspended registration risks fines of up to 1,200 lei and having their plates removed. The law takes effect in six months. For Ungheni residents the stake is concrete: 87 people died on the district's roads over ten years, and the inspection is done in town at just three stations.

128,000 tonnes on 383 kilometres: what the new EU truck rules mean for Ungheni's roads

Parliament has passed, in first reading, a law replacing today's weight limits — which differ from one road to another — with a single set aligned to EU standards, and it introduces the concept of TEN-T roads. For Ungheni — an agricultural district that hauls some 128,000 tonnes of grain and sunflower a year over 383 kilometres of roads, and through which the European railway to Iași will pass — the stake is who pays for the roads. Importantly, the weight limits take effect only upon EU accession.
