9.013 budget-funded university places, most of them for teachers — the very field where Ungheni has 73 empty posts

The government has approved the state order for 2026–2027: state universities are opening 9.013 places with budget funding, and the largest share, as last year, goes to teacher training. For a graduate from Ungheni, the stakes are double — the district enters the new school year with 73 uncovered teaching posts, the fifth-largest shortfall in the country, and admissions, entirely online, start on July 27. On top of that comes a second door, the one in Romania, which closes even earlier.

Ungheni teachers can enrol for free in a new stage of the DigiProf digital-skills programme

More than 8,000 teachers across the country — from kindergarten staff to high-school teachers and mentors — can join a new round of free digital training through the DigiProf programme, launched by the Ministry of Education with EU support. The training is free and runs in Romanian and Russian. For Ungheni district, which enters the school year with one of the country's largest teacher shortages, the bet is on the teachers already at the blackboard.

The state will pay to bus teachers from merged schools. In 20 years, Ungheni district has lost 19 schools and nearly half its pupils

Teachers left without a school when their institution is reorganized will be bused to their new workplace at the state's expense — a measure the government approved on 24 June. It sounds technical, but it hits a nerve in a district like Ungheni: over two decades the number of schools fell from 65 to 46 and pupils from 20,121 to 11,171, and in 2026 the gymnasium in Buzduganii de Sus was shut down. Transport solves staff mobility, not the 73 teaching posts still vacant.

73 teaching posts stand empty in Ungheni's schools as the state offers up to 375,000 lei

On 17 June the Ministry of Education opened registration for the placement contest for young teachers for the 2026–2027 school year. In the official list of vacancies, Ungheni district has 73 unfilled teaching posts — the fifth-largest shortage in the country — spread across more than twenty schools and kindergartens, from town lyceums to village gymnasiums. Applications run from 1 to 17 July, and young specialists who choose to teach here can receive one-off payments of up to 375,000 lei.

How the state is trying to bring young teachers into Ungheni district's schools

Ungheni district enters the new school year with dozens of unfilled teaching posts — among the most in the country. The Ministry of Education is betting on money — up to 375,000 lei — on benefits and on a dedicated campaign to bring young teachers into the district's schools.
