What 976,270 lei repaired at the high school in Măcărești, and who carried out the works

Ungheni District Council allocated 976,800 lei between 2023 and 2026 to the building of the «Elada» Theoretical High School in the village of Măcărești: the façade, 68 radiators, the heating pipes, one wall, the canteen's sewerage and the joinery in the bathroom and toilet. The public decisions showed only how much had been approved. The acceptance certificates, obtained by the newsroom from the school and from the District Council, now show who did the work and how much was paid: 976,270 lei, seven works, five contractors.

Whose money pays for the school renovations: in Costuleni, the district presents millions from the government as its own investments

The Ungheni District Council presented on Facebook the investments in the Todirești and Costuleni gymnasiums. The figures check out in documents — but at Costuleni, out of the roughly six-million-lei package, the district's own money is only the paving (531 thousand); the rest — the thermal insulation and the sanitary facilities — comes from the government and from the Ministry of Education. At Todirești, by contrast, the money really is the district's. All of it, five months before the reform takes these schools out of the District Council's subordination.

46 schools in Ungheni district move to the state, with 72.5% of the district budget — public documents do not say whether the district gains or loses

The Government has approved the draft «Restart in Education» reform, which still has to be voted by Parliament: from 1 January 2027, primary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums and special education move from district councils to Territorial Agencies for Education, subordinated to the ministry. District education departments are abolished. In Ungheni district this means 46 institutions with 11,061 pupils, and the segment that leaves amounts to 335.5 million lei, that is 72.5% of the district budget. The Ministry of Finance calculated that 14 district councils gain from the reform and 18 lose — but it did not publish the list, and Ungheni is not among the examples named.

Almost a million lei in four years for the high school building in Măcărești. Last year, the District Council allocated 505,500 lei for heating alone

The president of Ungheni district, Dionisie Ternovschi, published a video on Tuesday from the «Elada» Theoretical High School in Măcărești, saying that the district traditionally allocates money for current repairs there. The District Council's decisions put figures on that statement: 150,000 lei for 40 radiators in August 2025, 265,500 for the outdoor heating pipes in March and another 90,000 for rebuilding the standalone heating system in November — 505,500 lei in a single year, for heating alone. Added to the façade in 2023 and to the canteen wall and sewerage in May 2026, the allocations reach 976,800 lei in four years, for a school left with 19 pupils in grades X and XI.

9.013 budget-funded university places, most of them for teachers — the very field where Ungheni has 73 empty posts

The government has approved the state order for 2026–2027: state universities are opening 9.013 places with budget funding, and the largest share, as last year, goes to teacher training. For a graduate from Ungheni, the stakes are double — the district enters the new school year with 73 uncovered teaching posts, the fifth-largest shortfall in the country, and admissions, entirely online, start on July 27. On top of that comes a second door, the one in Romania, which closes even earlier.

Ungheni's Medical College has turned out 125 nurses — its largest class in four years, in a district that has lost 94

The class of 2026 collected its diplomas on 14 July: 125 graduates, in four groups. The number climbs year after year — 85 in 2023, 119 in 2024, 119 in 2025 — and it arrives in the very district that has 59 mid-level medical staff per 10,000 inhabitants against 94 nationally. How many of the class stay home is unknown: neither the hospital nor the health centre publishes its nursing vacancies, and the state's 96,000-lei grant is written for villages.

The «Elegie» children's choir of Ungheni's Music School wins the Grand Prize at an international competition

The «Elegie» children's choir, conducted by Ala Beleac, won the Grand Prize at the Elite International Arts Competition 2026 — a first-edition contest held entirely online. The distinction is a real victory for the children of Ungheni's Music School, and an occasion to look at the system behind it: a network of municipal art schools with nearly six decades of tradition, in a district that has lost more than half of its young people in twelve years.

Ungheni's “Vasile Alecsandri” high school builds its first gym: 13.7 million lei for the first stage alone

The oldest high school in Ungheni district, whose roughly 620 students have had no indoor gym until now, finally has a construction site. The state procurement registry shows a 13.72-million-lei contract for the building's structure, won by COLASS SA. The walls go up this year, the interior follows in 2027 — and the total cost will be higher, because the second stage is not yet budgeted.
