Ungheni education trade union joins national protest over salaries

The Executive Bureau of the district's education trade-union structure, led by Lilia Savin, decided on 10 August to back the protest calendar announced by the Federation of Education and Science Trade Unions — from picketing the Government on 19 August to a possible boycott of celebrations on 5 October. The reason: the salary increases promised to teachers for 1 September have become uncertain. What the 2027 fiscal policy would bring an Ungheni employee: 1,236 lei a year, but higher VAT on agriculture

On 6 August the government unveiled the draft fiscal policy for 2027 and sent it out for consultation. The most visible measure for employees: the tax-free portion of income rises from 29,700 to 40,000 lei a year — about 1,236 lei extra stay each year in the pocket of every worker earning above the threshold. In Ungheni district, with 16,349 employees, that adds up to as much as 20 million lei a year. But the same policy raises VAT on agriculture, accommodation and tourism from 8 to 12%, and Ungheni is an agricultural district. Nothing has been adopted yet: the draft is only now entering debate.

Parliament voted for the adequacy of the minimum wage to be measured against 50% of the average economy salary — a European benchmark that shows just how low today's minimum really is. Set against the figures of Ungheni district, where the average salary is about 3,700 lei below the national average, the stakes are twofold: the «decency» threshold is still far off, and across the Prut the minimum wage is more than twice as high.
