The 9-year-old boy who went missing in the Prut at Ungheni has been found dead

The search at Ungheni has ended in tragedy. On Thursday morning, 23 July, at 09.47, divers of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations found the body of the 9-year-old boy swept away on Tuesday by the currents of the Prut while bathing with other children. The body was found 3–4 kilometres downstream from where he entered the water; the exact cause of death is to be established by law enforcement. The tragedy comes a month after the district's Emergency Situations Commission ordered patrols in the bathing areas along the Prut.

A 16-year-old from Ungheni district drowned in a forbidden spot, four days after the district ordered water patrols

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations reports three drowning deaths in three days, two of them minors, all in unsupervised spots. The first case, on 26 June, is at Măcărești, in Ungheni district: a 16-year-old boy bathing with friends in a forbidden zone. The 2026 drowning toll has climbed to 31 people, 7 of them minors — up from 18 just ten days earlier. The tragedy came four days after the Ungheni Emergency Situations Commission ordered water patrols, but far from the municipality's two lifeguard-staffed beaches.

After 18 drownings nationwide, Ungheni District sends police and border guards on Prut river patrols

The Ungheni District Commission for Emergency Situations ordered joint patrols by police, rescuers and the border police in swimming spots along the Prut, including at weekends, and found that the municipal water rescue post must be brought up to standard. At the same meeting, emergency-fund requests from four mayoralties were sent back, for incomplete files.
