Moldova counts its forests for the first time in history. In Ungheni, no one officially knows even how much is left

The government has approved the first National Forest Inventory in the history of the Republic of Moldova — a five-year process worth 2.4 million euros, funded largely by Romania. Only then will the country know exactly how much forest it has. For Ungheni district the stakes are direct: official statistics publish no forest-cover percentage for the district, while the forests managed here — from the Plaiul Fagului reserve to the strips beside the villages — are quietly cut in winter for firewood.
