From 1,393 to 732 births in seven years: what Parliament's new guarantees bring to parents in Ungheni

Parliament voted, in the first reading, on a package of guarantees for employees with children: paternity leave will count toward the pension record, the Labour Code gains the notion of an 'employee with family responsibilities,' and single parents can no longer be put on night shifts without written consent. A confusion to avoid: for mothers, maternity leave already counted toward their pension — the novelty concerns fathers. And in Ungheni district, where births have fallen from 1,393 to 732 in seven years, the guarantees reach ever fewer families.

Ungheni residents who worked in Italy or Romania can pool their years for a pension — 3,300 Moldovans already receive one from abroad

Parliament voted, in the first reading, to connect the Republic of Moldova to the European system for exchanging social security data. The law will only take effect upon EU accession — but the mechanism that really matters already works: years worked in two countries are added together for a single pension, paid proportionally across borders, through bilateral agreements, including with Italy (since September 2025) and Romania (since 2011). For an ageing, emptying district like Ungheni — with 19,709 pensioners and heavy emigration to Italy — this is no technical detail.
