Ungheni residents who worked in Italy or Romania can pool their years for a pension — 3,300 Moldovans already receive one from abroad

Parliament voted, in the first reading, to connect the Republic of Moldova to the European system for exchanging social security data. The law will only take effect upon EU accession — but the mechanism that really matters already works: years worked in two countries are added together for a single pension, paid proportionally across borders, through bilateral agreements, including with Italy (since September 2025) and Romania (since 2011). For an ageing, emptying district like Ungheni — with 19,709 pensioners and heavy emigration to Italy — this is no technical detail.

€40,000 for ten cities in Moldova and Ukraine: Ungheni is eligible for the EU programme until 16 July

The State Chancellery has opened, for Moldova's towns and municipalities, a call under the European URBACT programme: ten cities from Moldova and Ukraine will each receive €40,000 for a pilot urban project, with a 16 July deadline. Ungheni, as a municipality, is among the roughly fifty right-bank towns and cities that can apply — in a competition that also includes every city in Ukraine. A newsroom calculation shows how narrow the gate is and what European experience Ungheni brings to the table.
