Ungheni district pays for 400 day-camp places for children: who goes free and what everyone else pays

Ungheni District Council opened the second session of the “Prietenia” (Friendship) camp on 6 July — a “day camp” for children, in Ungheni and Măcărești. Behind the ceremony lie concrete figures that matter to parents: 1.26 million lei from the district budget, 400 places spread across four 10-day sessions, free for children from vulnerable families and a 15% fee for everyone else. The programme has become the district's main form of organised holiday after the “Codreanca” camp was liquidated in February.

A hundred children from Ungheni district have left for camps in Romania, through the ARC programme

Around 100 children from Ungheni district have set off for the ARC camps in Romania — at Padiș, Cluj county, and Oglinzi, Neamț county — organised by the Department for Romanians Everywhere. For many families it is already a tradition: the children spend holiday days across the Prut free of charge, and for some it is the third summer in a row.

How Ungheni’s libraries hold on in a district with ever fewer children

A donation of children's books, made by writer Elena Vizir to a library in Ungheni, looks like a small gesture. Set against the official figures, it touches a nerve: over two decades, the book stock of the district's libraries has thinned by a quarter — and yet people use them more than fifteen years ago. Twenty teachers from Ungheni and Călărași learn how to include children with special needs in class

A workshop run by CCF Moldova trained 20 teachers from ten schools in the Ungheni and Călărași districts to work better with parents and with children who have special educational needs. They, in turn, will train more than 120 colleagues. Beyond the event, Ungheni is one of the country's two pilot regions for inclusive education — and the road from the orphanage to the classroom next door has changed radically in recent years.
