Vitalie Vrabie and Vasile Șoimaru, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, unveiled the informative panel on Independence Day. On this occasion, the mayor named all nine Ungheni deputies of the Independence Parliament — three of them are no longer alive.
Ungheni City Hall says the installation in Independence Square, put up in August 2023, is being vandalised repeatedly, and that the police have detained several perpetrators. How much the installation cost and how much the repairs have cost so far appears in no public source. The law, by contrast, is clear: the same act can be treated as an offence, carrying 900–1,800 lei, or as vandalism — a crime with no damage threshold, carrying a fine from 27,500 lei or up to one year in prison. When the perpetrator is a minor, the bill reaches the parents, and the fine money does not return to the town's budget.
